Nintendo: New Home Console for 2005
    Posted by: Laser Link - 23rd January 2003, 11:13 AM - Forum: Tendo City - Replies (32)

    Reuters
Satoru Iwata told Reuters in an interview that "We (Nintendo) are developing a new home video game console with a plan to release the new system around the same time as rival makers do."

Unlike Yamauchi, Iwata knows what coming too late can mean. "The PlayStation 2 debuted one-and-a-half years ahead of the GameCube. If we had launched the GameCube at the same time as PlayStation 2, the result would have been different. We will get ready for a (new) battle in 2005 although foreign game developers are now saying that rival next-generation systems won't come until 2006."

And Nintendo won't be pulling a Sega anytime soon. "When we withdraw from the home game console, that's when we withdraw from the video game business."

Now, do you think this will make a difference? Before answering, remember the DC was the first of the new consoles, and it was a bigger failure than the GC. Also, remember that the GameCube DID launch alongside the XBox in North America, and it's still struggling. I think it's a start, but Nintendo actually has to follow through and release it before or alongside the others. And they still have to address all the other problems that have held them back. But like I said, it's a start.

Jeff Minter is making a Gamecube game!

Jeff Minter (Llamasoft is pretty much him) is making a Gamecube game! PGC had the link, so then I went to his site and they have more info too (link below). :)

    http://www.planetgamecube.com/news.cfm?a...em&id=3870

    http://www.llamasoft.co.uk (Forums -> Blog)

I can honestly say I never saw this coming... I have followed Jeff Minter (and Llamasoft) for a couple years now but all he's made in the last few years was Tempest 3000 on Nuon and some more recent PocketPC games... so a new shooter from him? And with the help of Lionhead Studios? Wow! Cool!

Llamatron for PC has always been one of my favorite shooters, and Tempest 2000 (I've played the PC demo on the Jaguar emulator, though the Jag emulator doesn't get it right yet... no sound...) is really cool too... I love the 2d shooter genre so seeing another one on the Cube (Ikaruga, too) is great... given how N64 only had one 2d shooter in its whole lifespan...

Here's the link to his post from his blog at his site with more info than PGC has.

      The Getaway
    Posted by: OB1 - 22nd January 2003, 11:20 PM - Forum: Tendo City - Replies (2)

Well I got the game today and have played it for a few hours so I thought I'd tell you what I think of it at this early stage.

It's... not bad. The car controls are fine, although you slide way too easily. The on-foot parts are pretty mediocre though. The way your guy moves is very awkward, the camera is atrocious, and making him turn at a certain angle is frustrating and difficult. The aiming is "dumb" as it doesn't want to lock on to a guy shooting at you from a few inches away and rather targets an enemy halfway across the room.

The story and presentation are all really good though, and I'll have to play the game for a few more hours before I decide whether or not I want to keep it.

New PS2 game from Criterion Studio (PS2)

    Key Features

    • Tactical Squad Based Shooter with 3 modes of play: Single player, 2 player split screen co-op (four player co-op using I-Link) and Multiplayer levels with up to 8 players via I-Link or Online internet play.

    • Designed especially for the Playstation 2 entertainment system.

    • “Crimson Fire” will focus a great deal on character development to give the game a Hollywood Action Movie flavor. Characters will have personality, attitude, and emotions coupled with unique looks and abilities.

    • Advanced enemy AI:

Enemy interaction- Converse, alert, cover and distract each other.

Unique characteristics- i.e. foreign dialect, sleepy guard nodding off, boisterous cigar smoking leader, cowering overrun guard, etc.

React to sound and will investigate.

Enemy vision and hearing will vary with environmental surroundings.

Advanced pursuit logic- Follow, flank, retreat, cut off, and fake out maneuvers.

Capable of multiple sequence of events- i.e. Alert fellow guard of your presence, shoot at you, retreat up stairs, go through door, close door, wait behind door, ambush you upon entry.

    • Physically modeled joint linkages- Weapons will have unique forces upon impact on characters, and the game will use physics to collide the body with the environment. i.e A point-blank shotgun blast to the chest would send the body flying backwards with great force and slam against a wall, then drop to floor. If an enemy were standing next to a railing he would propel backwards, hit the railing with his legs and flip over it head first. No two shots would ever be the same.

    • Motion captured animations.

    • Self-sufficient AI squad members with basic on the fly commands; Assault, Guard, Cover and Regroup, with offensive or defensive mode (aggressive or stealthy).

    • Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround audio for enhanced 3D sound. The sense of "hearing" will play an essential roll in creating the mood and realism of the game.

    • Large variety of upgradeable weapons and gadgetry that will boast stunning special effects and over the top firepower...there will be no skimping or holding back in this department.

    • Advanced internally developed Renderware engine:

Full skeletal animation with fluid blending
Scripted and dynamically adaptive Artificial Intelligence
Dynamic shadows, light maps and environmental reflections
Complete vehicle rigid body physics and suspension simulation
    Full Multiplayer support
    Completely customizable particle system.

Definately a game I'll be keeping my eye on. After the spectacular Burnout 2 (both through gameplay and graphically), it's good to see the obviously talented guys back in action. :) And online, no less!

Good lord almighty. I can't believe these figures. Look at all of those shitty PS2 games that outsold Metroid Prime. Splinter Cell sold almost twice as many units than Prime in December. There were almost twice as many X-Boxes sold in December than Gamecubes, and now the X-Box has a million unit lead over the GC in Nortth America.

Can you imagine what's going to happen if Nintendo doesn't release their next console at the same time as the PS3 and X-Box 2? They're dead! There is no way around it.

      Metroid Movie begins production
    Posted by: Nintendarse - 22nd January 2003, 1:24 PM - Forum: Tendo City - Replies (25)

Key information: production of a Metroid-based movie has begun, and the producers have been responsible for American Pie and Final Destination. They're just bringing in writers and directors now, so don't expect this movie for a number of years.

    Nintendarse says:
Please, please make Carrie-Anne Moss Samus. We know she can play kick-ass (Matrix). We know she can play complex (Memento). She IS Samus. While you're at it, omnipotent being, please make Christopher Nolan (Memento) the director. If this movie is going to be any good, Samus must be psychologically intricate. And he's the guy to do it. I mean, because there are no real characters other than Samus, she must interact with figments of her imagination, such as her deceased parents. The themes should be solitude, spirituality, and the power of the dead on the living, much like Metroid Prime. Christopher Nolan and Carrie-Anne Moss are the people to really turn what could be a crappy movie into something special.

      The Phantom
Posted by: Dark Lord Neo - 21st January 2003, 10:18 PM - Forum: Tendo City - Replies (6)

    Quote:Destroy Your Game Systems
    The Phantom is coming...

January 21, 2003 - Normally we're a bit skeptical about the announcement of new game systems, especially when they're scheduled to come out in the same year they were announced and all calls to the manufacturer's offices are answered by smooth talking recordings that promise the "PR staff" will get right on our request. But, clearly this is the greatest thing ever.
Sure, we have no idea how fast or cool The Phantom is, what its specs are, who's in line to manufacture it, what partners the mysterious Infinium Labs Corporation has -- even if it is a corporation (which it does not appear to be) -- what platform the system is, how much it'll cost, what exactly it plays, how all this developer support is planned for, or even how they plan on meeting their unveiling and launch schedule with no complete hardware. Hell, we know absolutely nothing of worth, but we're going to go ahead and say it's a scaled down PC, possibly powered by Linux or some kind of wacky Lindows, though likely a stock version of Microsoft's money machine only with a far more simplified UI.

The slow loading official website and accompanying press release are so intentionally vague and devoid of anything worth reporting that many are believing this entire announcement to be an elaborate hoax. With no substantial evidence to either prove or disprove the actual existence of the machine, we're going to go ahead and say nothing at all. We'll let The Phantom In Depth description speak for itself:

"Infinium Labs is the inventor and manufacturer of the first broadband game console. The Phantom game console provides consumers the ultimate game playing experience with potentially thousands of games offered by the December 2003 launch."
Assuming, for the sake of argument, that The Phantom is corporeal, here's what we do know:

    No apparent optical drive
    Broadband enabled and dependent
    Required subscription service
Will retain the ability to play PC gamers online
    32,679 titles available (PC games)
    Patches and demos
    All content delivered over Internet
    Some "games" come preloaded
    2.4GHz wireless controller
    Ability to add peripherals
    Suspiciously vague press release
Suspiciously vague concept art of the system
    Suspiciously vague everything
We've also been unable to find out whether or not this company is even registered, which leads us to believe it is not. Searches for patents, trademarks, and more all turned up nothing. Who cares, right? If you're actively seeking gainful employment, Infinium Labs Corporation is currently looking for persons with the following backgrounds:

    Engineering
    Marketing
    Sales
    Business Development
    Operations
    Finance
    Information Systems
It may be a hoax, it may be entirely dependent on networking technology that isn't mature and an infrastructure that doesn't exist, and it may just be a cheap PC, but don't let our pessimism get you down, an official unveiling is expected in March of 2003, so we're planning on seeing it at the GDC (an event Infinium claims to be attending, even though Infinium isn't actually on the exhibitors list). Prior to the GDC, the company says it'll be at the DICE summit. After the GDC, it says it'll be at E3. It's not on that exposition's exhibitors list either. Okay.

I guess you can expect little to no more information, ever.

Well I'm ready to give up my cube and PS2
