      Will Wright's Spore
    Posted by: Great Rumbler - 17th March 2005, 5:58 PM - Forum: Tendo City - Replies (40)

Quote:Will Wright's Friday morning GDC speech, the disingenuously-titled "The Future of Content in Games," was in truth a trojan horse -- the real purpose of his talk was to reveal his latest project, a game called Spore.

Spore could end up being quite literally the biggest and most ambitious game ever attempted. Although it begins at the microscopic level, with players taking control of a monocellular organism in a tidal pool, the scale changes as the creature evolves and grows. The end result: A massive adventure spanning an entire galaxy with player-driven gameplay and design shared seamlessly online among the entire Spore community.

Spore seems to be a concise summary of Wright's virtuosic approach to game design. In tackling the most significant issues and trends facing developers moving into the next generation of games, he appears to have designed a project that gracefully encompasses a wide array of genres while giving players an unprecedented level of control over their game experience.

I really hope he doesn't pull a Fable with this one, tell us about how amazing this game is going to be and all the things you can do and then at the last minute show us a finished product that had a bunch of the best features cut out. Anyway, this is an amazing concept and I really hope he can pull it off.

I only just started. But so far my impressions are..

    Just.. wow.

Stealth does NOT get more fun than crawling through long grass in jungle camaflague trying to avoid alligators.

I also loved the whole "pretending it's going to be another Raiden protagonist" thing they had going on at the start. :D

I got out my knife and cut down a beehive, and then the bees attacked me. :(

I'll post more as I go through it, I'm sure OB1 will love the discussion. :)

Power Player... So like, pirated mass products have reached the US?
    Posted by: Dark Jaguar - 17th March 2005, 12:27 AM - Forum: Tendo City - Replies (16)

    http://www.powerplayerusa.com/

I saw a big stand of these with some guy hawking them out in a mall a week back, and I just checked out this site. Not a single bit of liscensed data on this thing at all... From what I can tell, it's about as legal as any Hong Kong multipak, only this one is made with pride in the USA.

So um, I'm just going to contact Nintendo about this. Maybe it is legal and all, but if not, hey at least I get the smug satisfaction of ruining some poor guy's business :D.

Game prices could be on the rise
    Posted by: Great Rumbler - 16th March 2005, 9:29 PM - Forum: Tendo City - Replies (6)

Quote:With the cost of making games and speculative next-gen console prices ever rising, many have mused about the possibility of higher game prices, one that looks more likely. Activision CEO Robert Kotik, in Investor's Business Daily, recently suggested raising their game prices by around $10. Says Mr Kotik:

"We haven't raised prices as an industry in 20 years," Kotick commented. "Look at the movie business as an analogy. You're not getting any more hours of entertainment -- it's the same two hours of a motion picture -- and yet you're spending twice as much as you did 10 years ago."

Any increase by the publisher in games' prices would naturally be reflected by retailers' price tags. Generally games cost $50, so an increase to even $60 is possible. And such an action by a third party as large as Activision could prompt other publishers to do the same.

Game prices, as a general rule, have been steadily falling over the years - this would mark a significant change.

It needs to go back down to $40, not up to $60. GAMES COST TOO MUCH!!

Jungle Beat is the most purely fun game I've played since forEVER
    Posted by: OB1 - 16th March 2005, 4:54 PM - Forum: Tendo City - Replies (20)

Well, almost. It's insanely fun. Why isn't anyone talking about it? SHAME ON YOU PEOPLE!

I only got to play it for a little while at my friend's house, but I haven't played something so immersive and thrilling like this in a really long type. As gimmicky as it may sound, banging on a set of bongos to play a platformer is insanely fun. A pure rush of adrenaline. Seriously, whoever thought this up is a genius. The learning curve was nothing and it felt extremely satisfying once I started getting really good, and in this game you REALLY get into it. I can't explain it, you people simply need to buy this game NOW.

    JUNGLE GET!

An Ism is the ULTIMATE word to describe a fighting style, THANK YOU CAPCOM! ISM ISM ISM ISM! I HATE THAT THE WORD ISM EXISTS! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGG!

So yeah, this article, which Weltall will eat up, basically states that American horror is horrible. Sure, they don't say that outright, but you can FEEL the contempt for our art in the very translator's voice.

I must agree, leaving things totally unexplained is the best way to freak someone out. That said, Silent Hill 1 didn't do that. By the end, you figure out EXACTLY what's been going on in that town. Sorta messes up SH2 when you realize that it all actually has an explanation...
