Very interesting article. It's long, but explaining the whole Fox News story takes a while. The charts showing how almost all Fox hosts follow the talking points precisely is particularly valuable. Of course everyone already knew that Fox does this stuff and has done it for years, but still it's interesting to see it all laid out there clearly.
I imported this game from England because it was fully translated there but never released here. The DS cases in the UK are thicker, for no reason I can figure out since there's still the same small space for the manual. Also their PEGI system is a lot more straight forward, though a warning for "controversy" really speaks to English stuffy stereotypes doesn't it?
It's great! The whole focus of the game is managing a business. Hmm, yeah that sounds aweful doesn't it? Well, it's fun in the game. Think Zelda, if instead of Link you had a loser who couldn't fight. In other to get through dungeons, you have to work out deals with people, tough bodyguards who do your fighting for you. The end goal is to get enough rupees to make it to the legendary Rupeeland, where all your dreams come true.
Also, the expressions Tingle makes are hilarious (and disturbing).
Ratko Mladic is the man who led the Serbian army during the wars of the '90s, of course, and who has a lot of responsibility for many of their war crimes, genocide included. He'd been hiding in Serbia ever since the wars ended in '99 or so, protected by some people there. Apparently the Serbian government's somewhat serious efforts to catch him (how serious they were has varied) finally actually got somewhere and they found him. Great news, this is a major step towards finally having justice for what was done, and towards Serbia normalizing its relations with other countries.
I'd missed that they'd announced a PC version of this for sure, that's great news because I have SFIV for the PC but couldn't get SSFIV because they didn't release a PC version. Now they finally are, and with the AE addon content too. So that's the good news -- it's coming.
The bad news is that it will still use the annoying Games for Windows Live, unfortunately, and it's got some irritating DRM as well -- it requires you to be signed in to GFWL and online in order to access a lot of content in the game. Not online? There's a lot of stuff you can't do. Idiots, all that does it make the pirated version better (such things will surely be patched to competence in that version). At least we're getting it, but come on, this is stupid. It does reduce my interest at getting this for anything less than one of those "really cheap DD store deal" specials. We'll see though, I'll certainly be getting it eventually some way or another.
The original. As I dig deeper into it, finally sitting down to give it the proper amount of time necessary to figure everything out, the more I like it. The first couple of missions are okay, infiltrating the Statue of Liberty and then a terrorist base in Battery Park, but the game really starts to shine once you're dropped into Hell's Kitchen. That's where the game finally opens up.
That's probably what I like most about this game: the ability to head into an area full of allied troops, enemy terrorists, and lots of NPCs with your next move all up to you. You go straight to the enemy base with guns blazing, you can explore the whole area gathering intel and supplies, or you can sneak around and try to avoid detection entirely. Each side has reward and risk involved. It never feels like the game is pushing you to pick one way or the other.
The downsides, of which there are two main ones, are that the game is a number of years old [and shows it] and in the enemy AI. The graphics are okay as far environments go, certainly nothing that's going to blow you away by today's standards, but they're much more pleasing than the character models, which look quite horrible the closer you get. There's also the issues of animations, which look incredibly stiff and aren't particularly varied. Enemy AI...well, it's there, but it ain't very good. You can blast a guy in the face and his partner, who's about ten feet away, won't even react. You can also stand in full sight of enemy who's about twenty feet away and he won't even see you. Make's the stealthy less troublesome, but also a bit less fun, since the risk of being caught is way lower than it seems it should.
Those two things aside, it's still a really fun, deep game. A 9 for this one.
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Invisible War is actually pretty good, though certainly not as good as the original.
Some of the RPG elements get toned down, unfortunately, but that aside it still presents a nice RPG experience with a relatively open world and plenty of choices about how to proceed through missions. It seems, however, as though the areas in this game aren't nearly as big as in the first, letting you explore areas that are smaller but with, perhaps, a bit more detail and depth in those areas.
Also, thanks to the high-resolution texture patch, it holds up fairly well in the graphics department.
It's a weak 8, maybe a very strong 7, mostly because it ends up being really short even if you do all of the sidequests and find most of the hidden areas/rooms.
