When you start lighting your stages and cut scenes you're going to pull your hair out if you dont understand the lighting basics, and you'll end up doing what most developers do, which is coloring the textures to achieve the desired effect instead of appointing it a lighting scheme which looks a thousand times better.
Just remember that light is how we see and the lighting you choose will be the main focus of the visual style of your game. Krappy lighting = Krap art and style.
