Wow, this PS1 actually works! Plugged it in and put in a disc and it works flawlessly... cool! :)
It has a manufacturing date on the bottom, October 1996. So it's not a launch system, just the first model. I didn't know that they kept making the PS1 with the red/white/yellow ports on the back for over a year, interesting... when exactly was it replaced then?
Also, I opened it up because it's just normal phillips screws and not any kind of security bits, and it seems to have metal inside, not plastic, which probably explains why the disc drive is still working. Looks like metal anyway.
