oops forgot DJ's questions.
WHAT IS A GRIP?
A Grip is someone who works on the set during the production phase (actual filming) who sets up just about anything and everything. They're hard workers. They all work under the Key Grip who also has the most responsibility and has to deal with the Gaffers (heavy duty Grips, they get the hardest stuff like building a 40 foot cage around the set for lighting and then having to actually plug 600 amp monsters together), and the best boys.
The best boys got their name because they make sure no one dies from being electrocuted. It is one of the most technical jobs in the production phase. He has to look at the amperage and tally up all the numbers going to the distro boxes and whips (cables) and makes sure no one's taking more power then is available (or else things explode). A best boy grip works with the grip gear and makes sure everything is safe, so that sand bags, lights, stands, cages, etc wont fall or hurt anyone during the production day.
These are a few of the thousands we've had to learn. :D And I completely agree that the names are stupid, but they're industry standard now so we have to live with it. You'll never guess what a Beefy Baby does :D:D:D
