Yeah, get rid of religion, things would be so much better off! I mean, anti-religious states such as Communist Russia or Communist China (among others) sure show us a better path... ... Yeah, no. Governments can be good or bad regardless of whether they believe in religion or not.
Ohh---I see your logic. If a bad country is officially atheist, then all countries that are atheist are bad! You're so mookish, you make mooks like like non-mooks. There is no logic in your argument. Those countries suck because they're communist and anti-western. You can have a non-communist, non-anti-western atheist country, where logic and reason take priority over superstition. Just because there isn't one now is not evidence that they cannot exist. If society, if humanity would pull their fucking heads out of their asses and wake up to the reality all around them, and stop seeing invisible fairies in the sky, to which they pray in false hope of a magical immortality in la-la-land, we could all work towards a REAL destiny, one that we can control. I mean come on, this is the 21st century goddamnit. HOW MANY TIMES does your god have to be disproven before you wake the fuck up? "Oh waa I have faith blah blah you can't disprove it blah blah"... I can't disprove leprechauns either but if you use your fucking BRAIN you may realize that neither one is REASONABLE TO BELIEVE IN.
Religion IS, always HAS BEEN and always WILL BE A CRUTCH. Every ancient society fashioned these CRUTCHES because man cannot deal with his own mortality--so he gets around it. Every society created their own crutches... we have Abrahamic crutches that kill each other, and we have Buddhists crutches that meditate... and we have jungle crutches that sacrifice people to their deities... but they're all CRUTCHES and they're all BULLSHIT.
That is to say, religion itself is not the problem. It's how it is used and how it is applied. Human civilizations have had religion for many thousands of years for good reasons,
Religion evolved because a humanity without hope for salvation, UNABLE TO DEAL WITH MORTALITY, faced with the (true) ultimate oblivion that we all faced, would probably not stand. PERHAPS these crutches, these barriers, these religions were important enough to ancient people that we needed them to get by... but if we STILL DO IN THIS TIME AND AGE... well then shit, we're a failed strain, we human scum.
This is not a good enough reason to live in darkness. Religion is the means to the end. Without it, at least in a more primitive time, humanity, I feel, would not have been able to carry on. Some people need that warm fuzziness of a friendly deity in the clouds. Other people have brains. Both work fine for ya, but I take the latter.
they help bind societies together among other things... religion isn't bad or something.
Yes it is. It's false. It's anti-science. It retards society and advancement.
Moderate religion, I would say, is almost entirely good (though of course, I did go to UU church all the way until I was 18, and like it the whole time, so I'm a bit biased there... ).
Religions don't have to be violent and muslim to be bad. They all spread mistruths and offer false hope to people. A humanity united in their shared, mutual reliance upon science and fact, and without need for superstitious afterlives, can finally put all of our assets to the really important things in life: improving humanity, and reaching the stars.
