That's actually one case were secularism kept a country from imploding, Is it no coincidence that as soon as the secular baathist were tossed out the country has erupted into sectarian violence.
Secular law was imposed by the British on Iraq after ww1, Saddam choose to maintain it since he knew full well that there would be a big clash over "Who is and isn't a true Muslim" and it would lead to a civil war where the odds were tremendously tipped against him, Saddam Encourage secularism and pan-Arabian nationalism to counter the tribal and sectarian divide in his country..
Now George Bush fucked it up with the new "iraq" becoming a "Islamic state" in its constitution.
