To be fair, perhaps that wasn't the best example. There are non-religious reasons to be opposed to gambling and that's not something I feel all that passionately about. It's just a current event in Alabama right now. I wouldn't mind some small-scale gambling in the state of Alabama (it's about the only state with no lotto), but I certainly wouldn't want my city looking like Vegas or anything.
What I don't like is when religion is used to impede real social and scientific progress. A better example of social progress is the acceptance of homosexuals. As for scientific progress, I already mentioned stem cell research. There's also still the issue of whether evolution should be taught in schools and whether it should be optional, with intelligent design as an alternative. The gambling issue isn't that big a deal to me.
