I never took fantasy to be medieval, especially since most fantasy stories take place in imaginary worlds that aren't based on our Earth. (Which by the way opens up another pet peeve of mine, when people complain about such and such technology being somewhere as "unrealistic" when the whole world is made up anyway, right down to continent shape.)
