I play it on it's belly where it deserves to be, the PS2 was kind of a let down because half the stuff on it was just a redone version of whatever was on the PSX and the other half was either multi-consol or just a sequal to the first half of crap.. so.. yeah..
While carts and memory sticks might seem kinda crapy because of thier size keep in mind that they use a shit load less energy and you can write and read at the same time, not only that but you can read from multiple items on the cart/stick which will save on load times, and as we all know the thing that most annoyed us about the PSX was load times well, atleast it was with me. I imagine the PSP will have rather noticable load times because one of sony's smartest moves in saving power would be to use a less powerfull motor to spin the mini dvd's.
In any case I am willing to bet no matter what sony does the psp will have games come out for it that will use more and more power then the unit was first designed to use, by this I mean the psp wasn't meant to be played off a disk while all the while listening to mp3's and using the wifi card all at the same time, I can imagine this being too much strain on it's power supply, on that note nintendo's decision to use cart/memory stick isn't as stupid as you might think, the Snes had a number of upgrades in the form of addon chips for the carts, most notable are the mode7 chips (it was also a programing technique made by nintendo also attempted by sega once or twice) and some other chip I can't be bothered remembering, my friend was telling me about it the other day, mode7 I remember though because of the games were made with it.
The camera, shaking pinball thing, the light game about vampires, wireless pokemon and a bunch of other stupid things all do-able because of the use of carts, though I think sony has a plan for using memory sticks in it's psp as well or atleast an expansion slot.
If not I'm sure thier USB 2 port will be able to support some form of upgrade, most of all this is speculation but I can guarentee you that the DS will have the longest battery life and will for sure have the most interesting games, maybe not the most media intensive but for sure the most fun...... wait, armored core is coming to psp? I'm a little split now..
