Sadly, the term "emo" has mainly stemmed off of what music you listen to. It has now become a trend all across the world, and usually the people that are "emo" a.) wear tight clothes, b.) comb their bangs to the side c.) write in livejournals quoting lyrics of their favorite "emo" band d.) go to local "emo"/punk concerts, e.)... the list goes on.

You know what punk rock is, right?? it is something that mainly started in Britain in the mid 70s to early 80s... bands such as the Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Ramons, Iggy and the Stooges, the Clash, (and many more) started to "revolt" with their music; singing about things that are out-of-the-ordinary. Their lyrics usually went against society and government and they wanted to have a feeling of being "free" with their music. Over the years, punk rock spread to world-wide acceptance, and it became very popular, even with its lyrical content and attitude.
But, with that being said, what the hell does this have to do with "emo"? Well, "emo" music came out of punk music. In the mid to late 90s, bands like the Offspring, Blink 182 and A Newfound Glory made punk music a part of "pop" culture, igniting fires in the hearts of girls all across the country. The "punk" scene was an acceptable standard of fashion and music, and it quickly became a trend. Around the same time as pop punk became popular, in the underground music scene, the "hardcore" bands were making it big as well. There are bands that take some heavy aspects of heavy metal and combine old punk elements into their music (bands like Poison the Well, Thrice, Bane.. etc.). The "hardcore" scene merged with the punk scene a few years ago, and now it's a trend everywhere. Within the whole hardcore scene is a "sXe" scene as well, that is, "straightedge" - not doing drugs or drinking, and various other beliefs are incorporated into this movement. These kids usually have "sXe" or "XXX" tattooed on them and dress like they're from the 80s. Straightedgism is now considered a gang in Nevada and Utah because just last year there was a few murders involved with sXe people. I'm not a member of this scene, but I'm into some heavy metal music, and I've seen these sXe kids swarm around someone who was enjoying a cup of beer and punch him because he was drinking.
Anyways, I'm sidetracking. Again, what does this have to do with "emo"? It has to do with emo because emo, punk, and hardcore are closely related. They are modern-day trends that have stemmed off of music and beliefs. The emo people listen to, well, "emo" music. "Emo" music is emotional music, that is, the lyrics usually sing about breaking up with boyfriends or girlfriends, thoughts of suicide, and trying to love someone that has a mate. In other words, they sing mostly about relationship matters. And that is why they are "depressed", writing in their livejournals about how their life sucks. In all reality, "emo" kids suck, they're the scum of the planet. To me, I don't really mind when girls listen to "emo" music, but when guys do and they have that trendy look to them, well, it just makes me sick. It is even a popular trend now for emo and hardcore guys to wear girls pants.
Can you listen to "emo" music and now be "emo"? Yes. You can. however, if that's the only music you listen to, you have severe problems. When I think "emo", I substitute that word with the word "trendy". They usually shop at stores like Hot Topic (no offense to anyone who shops there - darunia*cough*) and various other stores. But the bottom line is, they all dress the same, talk the same, and like the same music. It's kinda sad. They all have their own little cliques at school and don't really associate much outside of their "emo" clique. What I'm saying seems like a generalization, but I tell you, it's the truth. They are scum.
And no, they're not goth. That's something completely different, however there have been bands that have crossed over the punk music scene with the goth music scene (for example - The band The Misfits)...
