Yes, we should let the military do whatever it wants, millions of civilian casualties be darned... 
Oh wait, they did that anyway? What ELSE do you want, the complete obliteration of the whole of southeast asia? Seriously... sure, limits we put on our army hurt our success. But winning via bombs doesn't work. Never has. Only when combined with force... and our ground force was not working. As I said, we fundamentally did not understand the Vietnamese. They weren't fighting to defend Communism, they were fighting as nationalists defending their nation from invasion... our delusions about worldwide communism spreading step by step across the world led to this (as well as other) major tragedies. We never should have gone in to "help" France in the first place.
