Developers always need a good challenge to prove how good they are. You need limitations and challenges in order to become better. For example, the game that I'm making right now (not that I consider myself a developer, just a garage-level fooler-arounder) has an enormous amount of drawbacks that we have to find ways to work around, and in a few cases we came up with some great ideas that probably wouldn't have come up if it weren't for the limitations of the engine. Creating a game entirely from scratch is a tough thing to do, and sometimes I just hate java. Another example is the movie Jaws, where originally Spielberg wanted you to be able to see more of the shark, but because they couldn't get the effect right you saw very little of it in the movie which actually added to the suspense.
I forgot where I was going with this, but you get my point.
