GTA is a lot of fun to just mess around in. Vice City may've had some sucky missions, but getting past them was worth it in order to unlock the second island, buy properties, fly around in a helicopter, steal Diaz's mansion, and later just fiddle around. The city's huge and there are several things to do before it gets old. I'll admit, it's finally begun to get some gray hair with me, but every now and then I'll probably be turning it back on and just messing around in the city. Going on killing sprees, circling around in a tank with a 6-star wanted level for as long as I can before they finally somehow catch me, listening to music stations, finding hidden surprises, reading billboards, and just exploring overall. There always seems to be something else I missed everywhere I go. Sometimes, I just like to act like a normal citizen and drive/walk/fly around, check out sporting events at Hyman Memorial Stadium, buy some pizza, even attempt to drive with sanity and park in a parking lot. It's like accessing the real world from my own bedroom. Of course, I enjoy that kind of freedom in other games such as Zelda and Final Fantasy, but none are quite as accurate to the real world as this. And yes, Midtown Madness may be better for just driving, Doom may be better for just killing, Perfect Dark may be better for just doing missions, and Crazy Taxi may be better for just driving a taxi, but as GR said, only GTA does it all.
I wasted my money on Crazy Taxi. There's one town and you can't even cause that much carnage, nor can you just drive around freely. You have a time limit and you have to do your job. You can't even get out of your car. It gets old very fast. The beauty of GTA was that it was everything I wanted Crazy Taxi to be and then some. Crazy Taxi, to me, is more like what Weltall described GTA as being: a good rental, but not worth buying.
