GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 13th May 2004

Quote: General
- The game is more serious than the others, but the elements of comedy are still there.
- A full staff of reasearch personnel at Rockstar have been studying Las Vegas, San Diego, and Los Angeles for months to ensure that they truly capture the feelings of these cities.

Location
- The game will not take place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Las Vegas. It will take place IN ALL THREE as well as the countryside in between.
- Los Angeles will be called Los Santos, San Francisco will be called San Fieero, and Las Vegas will be called Las Venturra.
- Each city is about the same size as Vice City.
- Not all cities will be open at the start of the game.
- The entire game will be about four to six times as large as Vice City.
- San Fierro (San Francisco) will have hills. This city is more driving based.
- You can drive from LA, through the countryside, up a mountain, into San Fran, and onto Las Vegas.
- Driving through the desert won’t be empty and plain with a couple cacti...it will be vibrant and alive with weird things to see.
- There will be a lot more buildings with open interiors.

Graphics
- The graphics engine has been tweaked. Smog will be present in LA, and real-time reflections on cars, windows, and mirrors, as well as new techniques like radial lighting, which allows for more realistic shadowing, and soft-shadow lighting for interior levels will be present.
- Everything in the game now has independent models for day and night to give better lighting and shadowing.
- The game will have ragdoll physics, or “impact animation” in Rockstar’s words.

Vehicles
- As for vehicles, there will be pimped-out lowriders, and 90’s versions of some GTA3/VC cars will return.
- There will be bicycles.

Story
- Characters from the past will return.

Gameplay
- In the Las Vegas city, you will be able to buy and build a casino - and then run it.
- You can then gamble your money in the casino.
- Your character can dual wield pistols and potentially other weapons.
- You need to eat to retain your stamina. If you eat too much fast food, you become fat and pedestrians mock you for being fat. You also run slower. To remedy this, you can go to a gym to exercise.
- You can now rob homes. The robberies will require skill and planning, however.
- You can recruit gang members and use them to do four person drive-by’s. (seen here)

Weapons
- The choice of weapons will match the time in which the era of the early 90's.

Artificial Intelligence
- Enemy/pedestrian AI will be greatly revamped and they will think more logically. You can't beat someone to death in broad daylight and not have people notice and react.
- Your enemies will be smarter, which will make robbing houses take a lot of skill.

Music
- There will be a rap station, but there will be a variety of other stations as always.

An entire state (mini-state, but still) and three cities, each one the size of Vice City? HELL YES.

*puts GTA: SA on wishlist*

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Laser Link - 17th May 2004

Considering those cities are all hundreds of miles away from each other, they better fill in the desert and plains between the cities, or make them a lot closer together (probably the best option).

GTA: SA sounds incredible - The Former DMiller - 18th May 2004

I'm definitely hyped for this game now. After being slightly disappointed with Vice City I was thinking of holding off on getting the next GTA right away, but I might have to reconsider that.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Great Rumbler - 18th May 2004

I wonder if there'll be UFO's in the desert.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - alien space marine - 18th May 2004

Broken images wow!

GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 18th May 2004

Well it's GTA so of course the distance between the cities won't be the same as they are in real life. I'm not sure how many people would like to drive seven hours between each city. :D There will be highways and farmland, but Rockstar said that it'll be fun, not a chore.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Great Rumbler - 18th May 2004

I think it'd be fun to drive for seven or more hours through the parched and empty desert.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - A Black Falcon - 18th May 2004

Yeah, I'm sure you'd LOVE it... :)

GTA: SA sounds incredible - alien space marine - 18th May 2004

You should be abled to go into area 51 and gun down the brown nosers! Steal a UFO and do some damage.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Great Rumbler - 19th May 2004

Area 51 isn't anywhere near Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Las Vegas.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - alien space marine - 19th May 2004

thats what they want you too think! :)

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Geno - 20th May 2004

Woo! This game is gonna rock! Can we say Game of the Year 2004?!

I hope there's at least one good rock station (bring Lazlow back!) and not seven different rap stations and an opera station like in GTA3. Vice City had better music than GTA3, but it was set in the 80's, so whaddyou expect? I also hope that the stations have longer tracks so that you don't hear the same stuff over and over in one playing session. I've just about memorized VROCK and Chatterbox!

I hope the missions don't start to get sucky. That's what kept me from finishing GTA3. I never unlocked Shoreside Vale. (But making it far enough to unlock Staunton Island was so worth it--that place is awesome!) I beat Vice City a couple months ago, and there's nothing to do anymore--I've bought everything out. I suppose I could finish a few side missions. Anyone know if you can actually see Love Fist perform? Their agent did say something on the cell phone about giving Tommy tickets or something to that effect. That'd be awesome to see an actual simulation of a rock concert.

Anyway, enough of Vice City--out with the old and in with the new! San Andreas is gonna ROOOOOOOOCK!

GTA: SA sounds incredible - lazyfatbum - 23rd May 2004

Yay! More ASS from Rockstar! All the other GTA's sucked, and so will this one. When "You can do drive by's!" is used as a selling point - You know it's worthless. But hey, whatever floats your boat, you guys would probably buy this too:

GTA: SA sounds incredible - lazyfatbum - 23rd May 2004

And dont tell me you want it because of the awesome freedom or gameplay. GTA has always been just as limited as any other game and the gameplay is a shallow culmination of 3 or 4 badly writen game engines with more bugs than a kitchen at Denny's. If I want a game where I can do 'anything' i'll play Zelda or Morrowind.

Games like GTA give the industry a bad rep and make other American developers think success = 'mature' on the market when it's completely untrue and we end up with games like True Crime with Snoop Dog, jesus shit people. Fuck Rockstar and fuck their bullshit games for brainless people.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Great Rumbler - 23rd May 2004

I'd just liked to drive around in GTA.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Geno - 23rd May 2004

I see no reason to preach the whole "If you don't like the game, don't buy it, but leave the rest of us alone." point... it never gets across.

Though if I saw a game like that Nigga Jitsu one, I'd slice my eyes out and buy new ones.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Weltall - 23rd May 2004

Really?

GTA: SA sounds incredible - alien space marine - 24th May 2004

To bad that isnt a real game!:(

GTA: SA sounds incredible - lazyfatbum - 24th May 2004

Great Rumbler Wrote:I'd just liked to drive around in GTA.

Then get Midtown Madness 2 or 3 or whatever it's up to now. It's a better driving engine, the graphics are better and it has more modes of play. There are people walking the streets, but you cant run them over, boo friking hoo.

And Geno, you can tell me not to buy it and leave the rest of you alone. That's fine. Difference is that i'm working hard to get in to an American game developer house and no matter who I go to for a job, all they want to make is bullshit games like GTA. So no, it isn't about buying it or not. I want to see Rockstar burn to the ground and i want American devs to get their heads out of their asses and make some good games so we wont have to rely on Japan all the time for the best games.

The only time you will ever hear of a game that is selling record numbers based off it's gameplay alone is when it's on a Nintendo system and made BY Nintendo Company Limited! America has the best story tellers in the world, but if you judged us by the games we produce you would think we suck on toast and it's all because of moronic little children who werre born from freebasing parents that go "OOO!! i want this game b/c it has rapper artists and hookers and you can do drive-by's!!1 DAWG, G, ITS LIKE BUTTER, OFF THE HOOK, VARIOUS BUZZ WORDS AND PHRASES THAT MTV TAUGHT ME BECAUSE I HAVE NO PERSONALITY AND I'M LEACHING OFF MY PEERS AS TO DESPERATELY FIT IN."

Well, something like that.

If you keep buying shit, they keep making shit. God it's like living in the dark ages. Can you imagine where video games would be right now if every best seller was a best seller simply because of gameplay? No shock visuals or gore, no cursing or satanic images that make children drool for more or any other bullshit art direction to increase sales because the developers know their game sucks and it wont sell without it. *breathes* Wolfenstien introduced the concept of 3-D gaming. People loved it. What did the average joe say was main contributing factor in the reason he loved Wolfenstien?

Average Joe: GU.... I LIKE THE GUNS AND THE KILLING

So Id says: Fantastic, we'll take the engine we already made in the late 80's and reuse and apply it to every game we make for the next 10 years with barely any advancements but we'll make damn sure that every game has guns and killing!

Amerage Joe: YAY!!!! HEY... HOW COME THE GAMES DONT GET ANY BETTER??///

Id: Gufaw! Here, we'll reuse an older model of the DOOM engine and make a dungeons and dragons thing... we'll call it Hex... no machine guns... we just want to try the market with a new directiion.... spell casing instead of shooting....

Hex: *fails*

Id: Right! *releases 12 games using a 10 year old engine with guns and killing* wooooo! *makes ungodly amounts of money* *sells the engine to multiple companies*

Video game market in USA: *flooded with old, horrible looking first person shooters*

Average Joe: *scratches head like a retarded chimp* HEY HOW COME MY SUPER NINTENDO HAS BETTER GRAPHICS THAN MY NEW TOP OF THE LINE PC RUNNING DOOM II EXP. PACK VOLUME 34 ONLINE WITH NUDE PATCH?????/ GURF GURF GURF

That's you Geno! I hear you! You're scratching your head while playing GTA VC and wondering why you get bored so quickly and how come it has so many bugs! you're yelling GURF GURF GURF at the top of your lungs right now! Look at you! You make me SICK!

The entire industry didn't take a big step forward with FPS's until GOLDENEYE because before that they knew you would PURCHASE RAT FECES IF THEIR NAME WAS ON IT BECAUSE YOU'SM LIKE A THEM THERE SHIT GAMES THAT YOU ONLY BOUGHT BECAUSE OF GORE OR CURSING AND MEANWHILE GAMES LIKE ANIMAL CROSSING GET IGNORED BECAUSE THERE'S NO PIMPS SLAPPING THEIR BITCHES FOR YOU TO RUN OVER IN YOUR CHERRY MAZDA CONVERTIBLE WITH GOLD HUBCAPS.

Arg. I want people to think before they buy, because what YOU, the consumer, purchase with your hard earned money you got from selling crack to little white children at your school raises the eyebrows of marketing execs who take a good look at what you bought and why you bought it and then tries to emulate it so you buy the next re-packaged bullshit.

The only good thing GTA and games like it do for the industry is make good games look all the better.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 25th May 2004

Lazy, you may not like GTA for whatever reason (gee, could it be that you hate all non-Nintendo games? Hmm...), but GTA 3 and VC got much better reviews from most gaming sites and mags than your beloved Luigi's Mansion and 1080 Avalanche did. Average scores of over 90% from dozens of different sites and mags according to gamerankings.com, compared to 80% and 76% for LM and 1080, respectively. Even Miyamoto complimented GTA3 for selling well for its gameplay despite its poor graphics.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Weltall - 25th May 2004

I kinda agree with him on GTA, though not because of it selling due to it's violence. I just don't think the games are all that fun.

Now sure, I get them, and they're fun... but after about three days, I've done all I wanted to. The missions have always sucked. The best thing about GTA is the radio shows, pure genius.

That said, GTA2 is my favorite in the series.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - lazyfatbum - 26th May 2004

The radio and the 80's look and feel are pretty cool aspects of the series. I wish it focused on gameplay instead of random poorly made engines thrown together.

OB1/ I just said a few posts back that I would rather play Zelda or Morrowind. Morrowind is not a Nintendo made game. Also, I never pay attention to "scores" anymore because they're all biased BS. I rent them and make my judgement. You can find a good score for any game, it just depends on the website you go to.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Geno - 26th May 2004

Glad you have that free will. But shouldn't we also have the free will to like GTA? I don't like GTA because it got good scores. I, too, pay no attention to that kind of thing. It's only a coincidence that several hundreds of thousands of people like the same kind of thing I like. I'm not the type of person that "follows the crowd." If I stopped liking GTA because you told us that we're all idiots for like it, then I'd be giving up my right to form my own opinion, making me no different than those people who find out that a game like Nigga Jitsu got a high rating from Bullshit Game Magazine and decide that I have to like it too in order to be "accepted." I play games to appease myself, not others.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 26th May 2004

I posted scores to show how just about every game reviewer on the planet enjoyed the last two GTA's, so it can't be as bad as lazy claims it to be. And he blames that on bias?? Bias towards whom? GTA 3 came out of nowhere, got great reviews because it was fun, and about a month later it sold like mad.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Great Rumbler - 26th May 2004

I really loved just driving around in GTA, listening to the music, performing some insane stunts like jumping over the river at about 100mph, running from the cops just to see how long I could go before they caught me, then there was flying around in the helicopter and landing on top of cars, and riding around on a motocycle, just zooming around the city at insane speeds. There might be games that do parts of GTA better, but only GTA does it all.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 26th May 2004

Indeed. The missions aren't very good, but just driving and flying around the cities is fun as hell.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Weltall - 26th May 2004

Right. The game is very good, except that it has absolutely no staying power. A five-day rental will show me all I want to see. I paid full price for GTA3 and that was a terrible mistake.

GTA is a good rental. Unfortunately, by my standards, that doesn't really make a game good. It's got the foundation to be incredible, but it is a buggy game, and the real meat of the game, the missions, are very poorly-thought out and repetitive. And some of them are almost insanely impossible.

Still, it's nice to fire up the game and just tour the cities. As far as exploration, detail, and definitely the sound, GTA has it going on. I just wish that there were something to do after I've driven around.

GTA2 is still my favorite, even though reviewers consider it the worst in the series. I never played GTA1, but 2 actually has fun missions AND you don't have to do a single one of them to proceed.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 26th May 2004

If you don't enjoy driving and flying around big cities, pulling off stunts and screwing around then I can understand how you would be disinterested in such a game. The GTA games are not going to be seen as classics ten years down the road, but they will be seen as games that ushered in a whole new era of open-ended gameplay. Imagine if you will a Cowboy Bebop game that blends the nonlinear bounty hunting and space portions of Privateer with planet levels that offer players large cities to explore on foot, car, or ship, with GTA-like freedom. That would make for one incredible Bebop game, don't you think?

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Geno - 27th May 2004

GTA is a lot of fun to just mess around in. Vice City may've had some sucky missions, but getting past them was worth it in order to unlock the second island, buy properties, fly around in a helicopter, steal Diaz's mansion, and later just fiddle around. The city's huge and there are several things to do before it gets old. I'll admit, it's finally begun to get some gray hair with me, but every now and then I'll probably be turning it back on and just messing around in the city. Going on killing sprees, circling around in a tank with a 6-star wanted level for as long as I can before they finally somehow catch me, listening to music stations, finding hidden surprises, reading billboards, and just exploring overall. There always seems to be something else I missed everywhere I go. Sometimes, I just like to act like a normal citizen and drive/walk/fly around, check out sporting events at Hyman Memorial Stadium, buy some pizza, even attempt to drive with sanity and park in a parking lot. It's like accessing the real world from my own bedroom. Of course, I enjoy that kind of freedom in other games such as Zelda and Final Fantasy, but none are quite as accurate to the real world as this. And yes, Midtown Madness may be better for just driving, Doom may be better for just killing, Perfect Dark may be better for just doing missions, and Crazy Taxi may be better for just driving a taxi, but as GR said, only GTA does it all.

I wasted my money on Crazy Taxi. There's one town and you can't even cause that much carnage, nor can you just drive around freely. You have a time limit and you have to do your job. You can't even get out of your car. It gets old very fast. The beauty of GTA was that it was everything I wanted Crazy Taxi to be and then some. Crazy Taxi, to me, is more like what Weltall described GTA as being: a good rental, but not worth buying.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Weltall - 28th May 2004

I LOVE Crazy Taxi. My sister and I have been in an eternal competition in CT1 (and she's been ahead for a long time). It's nothing deep at all, and I rarely play longer than an hour at a time, but it's an assload of fun, especially when you're in the groove.

It's one of those games like Pac-Man or Tetris, I never get tired of it.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 28th May 2004

You love it so much that you have to post about it twice! :p

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Great Rumbler - 28th May 2004

If you love it so much why don't you marry it?!

GTA: SA sounds incredible - A Black Falcon - 28th May 2004

I rented Crazy Taxi. It's such a simplistic game... don't know if it'd actually be worth paying for...

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Great Rumbler - 28th May 2004

I liked Crazy Taxi. It was pure arcade-simplistic fun.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - A Black Falcon - 28th May 2004

Nothing is wrong with simplistic, but... I don't know, all you do is get passengers and deliver them. Oh, and the time limit is very irritating... makes you play a few minuites at a time... it was fun for a little while. It's a great arcade game. But as a home title? I just don't think there's enough there for me to keep much interest... (oh, I like some simplistic games, certainly... but my point isn't about that, it's about that this game's gameplay just isn't enough to last long, really, I'd say.) I didn't even play it nearly as much as I could have during the 5-day rental.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 28th May 2004

Crazy Taxi has a lot more depth to it than any of the crappy Cruisin' games, that's for certain. It's not a deep game but it's very fun.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - A Black Falcon - 28th May 2004

It'd be better if I had had any sense that I'm getting somewhere or progressing in the game in some way by playing it... I want a goal.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 28th May 2004

The goal is to deliver people to their destinations and rack up points.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - A Black Falcon - 28th May 2004

I know... but does doing that get you anywhere? Can you win the game?

GTA: SA sounds incredible - OB1 - 28th May 2004

That's like asking if racing from point A to point B gets you anywhere.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - alien space marine - 28th May 2004

I think I would like too see GTA Montreal! We got the french hells angels!
The French mafia , A really big cool city with lots of land marks.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Dark Jaguar - 28th May 2004

I'll be interested in the series when I can interact with people using something other than weaponry.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Great Rumbler - 28th May 2004

The next GTA game should be set in Japan or Hong Kong...okay how about they just set the next game in both?

GTA: SA sounds incredible - alien space marine - 28th May 2004

Russia would be cool!

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Great Rumbler - 28th May 2004

GTA Europe might be pretty cool.

GTA: SA sounds incredible - Dark Jaguar - 28th May 2004

GTA Montreal? I don't think anyone could ever take that seriously. What are the police going to say "eh?" at you in an amusing fasion?

GTA: SA sounds incredible - alien space marine - 28th May 2004

No they would probaily curse at you in french.
