Having lefties in your lineup is overrated. We had a lefty last year (Shawn Estes) and he sucked. I'd much rather have a good righty in Maddux than a bad lefty. The reason teams want lefties in their lineups is for a change of pace. Maddux provides a change of pace as he is a finesse pitcher in a lineup of power pitchers.
As for the dugouts, it's so they don't have to sit out in the hot sun for every game of a 162 game season. Other sports don't have to go through that many games a year and even though baseball isn't as strenous as other sports playing that many games of anything can get to you if you aren't careful.
