I think ASM's the only other one here who plays these games, so he's the only one I'd really expect to reply...
Presumably a lot like Shogun, Medieval, Rome, Medieval II, or Empire, but with some new stuff added. :p
... Strategy game. Overworld map of the world where you tell your armies where to go, build stuff, move other units, do diplomacy, etc. Battles are fought in very cool 3d engines that have always been the star attraction of Total War series games. The world-map strategy sides of the games are always somewhat simple, which is too bad (I'd love to see more depth!), but they mostly make up for it with style and those battles.
