Sacred Jellybean Wrote:Nope. Magnolia was a huge, steaming pile of shit. I can't believe how much hype it gets... it's so damn cheesy and saccharine. How can anyone even take that movie seriously after the montage where all the major characters are singing lines from the same love song? So awful...
Maybe I'm being a little hard on it... but it's easy to be spiteful when mostly everyone loves something that you just don't understand. Add in 3 hours and 40 minutes of "Why the hell am I still watching this crap?", and you've got even more frustration.
It had promise, but it was just too long, cheesy, and self-important. Any substance it might have had is negated when the viewer can't take the movie seriously.
How unfortunate. I thought the movie was funny, insightful, thought-provoking, well acted, dramatic, moody... There are many adjectives to describe this movie, and none of them are negative. It definetly wasn't conventional and I felt like some parts, like the aformentioned montage, as well as the climax with all the frogs, made the movie that much better. I'm not going to try to offer any bullshit artsy-fartsy hipster explanations for either of those parts, because people who do that are douchebags, but they didn't hurt the film IMO. At any rate, I liked Magnolia more than PTA's other films, but I haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet, which looks awesome.
