Two SKU's for $499 and $599, Sony's online component looks exactly like Xbox Live, and the they ripped off the Wiimote by adding in tilt sensors to the Dual Shock 3.

Innovation!
Pricing!

$536 (59800 Yen) in Japan for the 20GB version; 'set your price' for the 60GB.

$499/$599 in the USA

USD$634/$761 in Europe-Eurozone (499 Euros/599 Euros)

Price in England not mentioned. (Pounds) It'll be at least as much USD as it is in Europe for sure though...

Note how bad Europeans get it?

As for the controller, yeah, blatant Wiimote ripoff... but it's just the tilt functionality. Note how he's flying just by tilting the controller... they said 'without a sensor bar'. Well of course not -- the Wiimote can do that stuff too without a sensor bar! It just needs the bar for the POSITIONAL/AIMING element -- which the PS3 controller does not have. So Sony hasn't quite cloned the Wiimote there... it's got one part, but not all of it. And it was inevitable that the controller would be cloned.

Nintendo was probably just hoping that it'd be as an addon, not as a standard controller...
How much was the premium 360 in the US, the one with the HD, it's $499CDN
Xbox360 premium was $399.
I'll... wait.

So will every parent. "You just GOT that (insert something else here)." will be the mantra.

As for them copying Nintendo's idea, N_A seems outright OFFENDED at it. I'm sure he was equally offended when Nintendo copied Atari's idea for "a game console using cartridges", or when people started copying the concept of "web pages" and "hyper links" when the internet was first formed, for the sake of being consistent.

Was Sony just supposed to lie down and die? Were they supposed to intentionally ignore Nintendo's innovation despite the fact that it really could prove important in designing new games? I didn't think so. There's nothing to be ashamed OF. So what if it's a blatent copy attempt (and not a very good one it seems).

Look at the alternative, or as I call it, Microsoft. They ignore all new innovations any other company makes, to their detriment. Look at IE, and the security changes they are making in Vista as I discussed in another thread. THAT is the price of not keeping an eye out on the competition, seeing what makes for a good innovation that should become standard across the market, and implementing that into your own product.
Considering that up until this point Sony had been bashing Nintendo as company that relies on gimmick, even during their E3 press conference, then they suddenly pull out a control that, suprise!!, copies they very thing they referred to as nothing more than a gimmick. Then they have the gall to call it "innovation". Sure it is.
From GAF:

Quote:LOLLers. Sony is so screwed.

The PS3 retard pack doesn't come with HDMI (so much for TRUE HD 1080p), nor does it come with WiFi, nor does it come with MemoryStick/Compactflash/SD slots.

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/rele...f/060509ae.pdf

And they had to get rid of rumble to make the tilt detection work...

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/rele...f/060509be.pdf

SONY AM SCREWED TOTAL.

What a disaster.
oh... holy jesus.

Is that confirmed? no rumble? 600!? cheap tilt control?? didn't MS have a tilt controller years ago?
SONY IS DOOMED! DOOMED!
It was only $399US? Ugh, how does a 10ยข difference in currency values become $100?
Ya, PS3 deffinitly does not look like it'll be worth it.
Watch the press conference, Warhawk being controlled by the tilt... it works, but it's obviously a last-minuite thing, and without the Rev's positional control it's like a half-feature... and with that price, and no rumble, and all the usual problems of having the cheaper pack (that makes the $600 one a necessity)? Sony could have trouble... maybe not, but that is very expensive.
So they ditched some features, and we already knew they were ditching the rumble for other more legal reasons.

I wouldn't take a "hatsers" post as being that accurate, but that pdf document certainly is trustworthy. That is, if those links worked...
All they had to do was pay for the rumble like MS and Nintendo did, but no, they had to fight...

They could use it, and hope that their remaining years of legal delays will help, but yeah, not smart.

Still, it's interesting that they can't find some other way to do rumble that doesn't infringe on the patents... it IS possible, I believe; I don't think the patents that Sony infringed cover every possible way of doing rumble...
Unbelievable, i was all set to to start flaming and bashing sony and... i dont have to; They did it for me! on IGN they have all the games up that was shown and at best they looked like new 360 games. is anyone actually going to pay almost twice as much for a console that plays 360 games? Especially considering the 360 will probably have a price drop before PS3 is released?

I thought i'd seen that tech in a pad before and I was right in that the controller has indeed been done before. It's a mercury switch inside, essentially a third control stick that gives you a 2-D Plane of movement by tilting the controller (as one giant control stick). But i'm holding a PS2 pad right now and while banking feels good, trying to climb or dive feels really awkward - especially if they did this in a FPS for 'looking'. Since it doesnt actually detect where the controller is, it just detects the angle that you're holding it. So imagine playing a FPS and having to pitch the controller straight up to look straight up (or straight down) and it becomes down right uncomfortable. There's a reason why those merc-switch PC controllers didn't sell, I cant believe they not only copied the idea of Nintendo but then did a krappy job at copying them.

on the plus side, i can see the tilting being used in a FPS for peeking around corners (cppcrusader and I were playing with the idea) or shifting your weight while on a motorcycle, but there's litteraly nothing beyond that. It's litteraly a third control stick.

You cant do anything what the Wii does, when you jab with the wiimote it detects where you're aiming and how 'far' you're reaching, so you can punch a guy in the face, and then the stomach, even two handed and hit different location at once, or make slicing motions for a knife, etc. With the PS3's controller you can make the jabbing motion but it wont have any idea what direction you're trying to aim for, it wont know you're jabbing at the face or stomach and there's no way to give it that functionality without a sensor on the TV. of course, the eyetoy can add that sensor, but that means every developer would have to code for the eyetoy *and* sony would have to release a dual shock 4 with a sensor on it as well!

this is just a stupid move... they added nothing to gaming, what you do with the PS3 controller can be achieved by using any combination of the 2 sets of triggers or one of the control sticks.

edit - well, it cant even jab. It's a merc switch, so if you jab, it wont pick up anything. Which means the PS3 controller's tilting is designed with slow movements in mind.

stupid, stupid move. if you've ever played Wario Ware Twisted, that's exactly what the PS3 controller does. Except now, instead of moving the screen to interact with a virtual world, you move a controller to tilt things...

expect alot of racing games using it (drift turning? weight shifting) and flying games, and that's about it.

I said 'wow', but it wasn't in the good way. I'm picturing Ken with a group of japanese techs trying to put tilting technology in the PS2 dual shock controler 20 minutes before the show.
And you didn't even have to mention the crippled $500 cheap version ($500 cheap? :D) or the lack of rumble... :)
I dunno, I was pretty impressed by the Final Fantasy XIII video.

Other than that? No I, I think I'd rather not.

Sony just reinvented the CD-i, in terms of a system so expensive it pretty much excludes the market. At least the "lesser" 360 is selling because it's frickin' affordable, even without the all important hard drive.

Nintendo on the other hand is selling a system people can afford. I'm hoping they can make it compete with the other two in terms of power. I'm not expecting it to be most powerful, but if it was the PS2 to the other two's GCN and XBox, that would be fine.
Oh, some of the games did look good (Lair, MGS4, and FFXIII, to name probably the best three), but hardware-wise...

LOL internet!

Meanwhile, there are some Zelda fans at Blizzard...

So many thoughts...I want to do so much mud slinging...but it all comes down to

LOL

A 360 + Wii combo is looking really good. :D

EDIT: Just realized I would be able to get a 360 & a Wii for about the same price as a PS3. Ridiculous.
Metal Gear Solid 4:

It REALLY makes me wish that the PS3 didn't cost so much.
Oh, I almost forgot one more thing that they ripped off. The PSP will now be able to connect to the PS3. So in certain racing games you can use the PSP as a REARVIEW MIRROR. Fabulous.
What are you supposed to do? have a friend hold it for you? Tape it to the TV? does the PSP have a stand?
No, you play using the PSP, obviously.

And by the way, the PS2 can already link up with the PSP, so can the PC. It's called a USB cable folks. In fact MGS3Subsistance uses the link to move pictures to MGA2.
Quote:Oh, I almost forgot one more thing that they ripped off. The PSP will now be able to connect to the PS3. So in certain racing games you can use the PSP as a REARVIEW MIRROR. Fabulous.

Oh right, I think I blocked that out, but I seem to remember talking about how Sony must have realized how badly they needed connectivity after Nintendo's connectivity was such as great success...

Uh, it wasn't? Right. So why exactly is Sony trying too... it won't be more successful for them, I'm sure. :)
Sony didn't "add connectivity"! It's already built into any system that has a USB connection. In fact, XBox 360 games can make use of PSP connectivity.

It's only a matter of the game designers saying "hey, let's make a game that uses a connection to the PSP".
Quote:It's only a matter of the game designers saying "hey, let's make a game that uses a connection to the PSP".

But their implementation of it is horrible. "Hey, let's allow people to use the PSP as a rearview mirror in racing games!!" Ugh.
Eh. Yeah, that could easily just be done on a single screen.

In fact the only good purpose of a second screen that only one person can be expected to see is hidden stuff in multiplayer games.

I wonder... What level of blasphemy is it when a 3rd party designs a game for the Revolution that links up to the PSP (since the DS doesn't have a USB port)?
This is speculation, but I don't think it would be too hard to link the DS and Wii through Wifi.
Hmm, yes I can see that. Yeah, that'd do just fine. Now then, just find a way to link it up to my PC and I'll be set.

Holy shit! It got bigger!
Sony am DOOMED.
Sony should go 3rd party.
One console future, Wii FTW!

It feels so good.
Wii shall see. (Ya see? You see what I did there?)

But really, Sony has stated they will continue to support the PS2 for a few years yet. To be honest, I'm not surprised at all. They pretty much have to, unless they can manage to cut down the system power.

This is sad, because I really wanted to play a lot of those games, but I, I just can't! I mean, I just CAN'T!
Quote:Holy shit! It got bigger!

I guess that the rumors that they couldn't fit everything inside the box were true! :D
The PS3 is 5kg, compared to the Xbox's 3.8kg.
And this, right after removing the hard disk support from newer models of the PS2. In fact, the newest model of the PS2 (pretty much the same in other respects) just so happens to have totally ditched the modem port as well. Ethernet is still there, but there's no dialup support. Considering that a number of games do in fact support it and there are still a number of people using dialup, that's unfortunate.

At this point, what do they want from me!?
I am bathing in hate right now, handfulls of bile, concentrated fanboyish extacy. Thank you Sony, thank you for fucking up royaly and making this wiitard/wiiner so incredibly happy.

Seriously though, this is alot of poop and sony needs to come out with the damage control big guns, like minus the retard pack and lower the price of the 'real' PS3 box to 500. hell take out the bluray drive, no one's going to use it anyway. :D
This is Sony's chance to make billions off of Blu-Ray royalties, they won't drop that feature now, even it IS creating so much unrest in gamerdom...

But yeah, this reaction is great. A bit surprisingly strong, actually... I mean, while Sony's presentation was desperate (tilt controller? Ah...), and Sony is soulless and evil, they did show a bunch of decent to good looking games... but I guess when the price is that high that doesn't really matter. :) I sure won't be getting one anytime soon...
It's hard to believe, isn't it, Smoke?
Sony should change their lineup. Include 60 gig drives with both systems, but do what Nintendo (of Japan) did with the Q. The super expensive system can have blue ray drive in it, but it'll only be used for movies anyway. Meanwhile, taking that out of the less expensive one might actually make it AFFORDABLE by mere mortals, and honestly I won't be missing anything. I'm actually fine with DVD right now. In fact, no one I know of really is ready to make the next jump. DVD was a huge leap over VHS in a way that was palpable to laymen. HD-DVD and Blu Ray? Not so much...
sony is going to use blu-ray for games as well, jaguar.
I know. I know that. I'm saying they should just drop that and just ditch the blu ray as proprietary and stick with DVD. CLEARLY they can't make an affordable system with one. They can just make a more expensive one with the blu ray, only it will only be for movies.

But then again, I'm just being a crybaby about the price, aren't I?
that would kind of destroy the entire point of two things, one being that blu-ray will allow for tons of textures 'n stuff, and two being that sony wants to get blu-rays into as many homes as possible, even if you don't really want one. $600 is cheap for a blu-ray player, but not for a console. however having all of that storage space will be a great help for games.
Sony has become arrogant, plain and simple. They believe they can charge a huge amount for their Playstation, that uses Sony's proprietary HD format, and people will pay for it.
Except that as of yet XBox 360 games and PC games, which are already using high resolution, don't seem to be suffering for want of more space. DVD seems more than enough so far. Besides, didn't you say that the new Twilight Princess game didn't really need much extra space if they did put better textures on the Rev version? I really don't see that much of an advantage, especially not a $300 dollar one. And, if $600 is cheap for a blu ray player, there is NO WAY I'm getting one yet. I'll wait just like I did with DVD players (my first one being a PS2) until its actually at a reasonable price, rather than "I am going to abuse your bank account until it needs counciling" price.
people said that cd was enough as well. and carts. people say the same thing about every old format when faced with something better. it'll probably take a year or so before developers really need more than 9 gigs of space, but the time will come.
Blu Ray = More money for Sony

That's the only reason. You will get better picture and sound quality with movies that are on Blu Ray/HDDVDs though, but you'd need an advanced set up to take advantage of it. Games will eventually use that much space, no question, but we aren't even close yet.
we'll be there in a year or two. developers are working with restrictions now, and once freed from these restrictions should take advantage of the great brd capacity.

and of course it's about money. think sony or anyone else is in business for any other reason?
