You know, on that note, what's the deal with Yoshi's anyway?

So they apparently just lay eggs and reproduce without mating of any kind, but like how do they become all the colors of the rainbow? I suspect that it has something to do with the game's programming...

What gender IS Yoshi, anyway... I mean, they look male, kinda, and have a male-seeming name, but lay eggs...

As for the eggs, it's obviously like chickens... they can lay unfertilized eggs, after all.

According to SSBM, Yoshis have no gender. They are asexual creatures. They basically just produce eggs that don't need to be fetilized, and can reproduce without a mate, so long as they have the food they need to do so. That might explain why ALL Yoshis are identical, except for color.

That's impossible for animals, of course. Only things like single-cell creatures can do that...

Why is that "impossible" for animals? Imagine a creature that, instead of needing outside DNA to complete a hedrix, it instead just uses it's own COMPLETE DNA. Cloning already shows that's possible. From there, just go about the normal process of making an egg. The major drawback, the main reason why sex was invented, is the sheer slowness of evolution via this method. Sexual reproduction allows random genetic combinations to occur much more rapidly than the asexual variety.

That said, there are a number of multi-celled animals that reproduce completely asexually. For example, intestinal worms. Starfish can do sorta either or. Essentially, the very simplistic animals do it that way because it's faily easy to do so, or because they have no choice. (For examples, intestinal worms really don't have much of a choice, they can't just wait around for a mate to come down the tube.)

So yeah, it'll work for more complicated creatures, but they will still need to go about the entire gestation thing. I mean, the whole sexual part is MORE complicated. They need to actually cut the DNA in half and put it in the egg or sperm and then the rest. It's easier to just put the complete DNA in an egg and let it go from there. If the body is designed like that from the start, there ya go.

There must be a reason no complex creatures use asexual reproduction... and Yoshis definitely aren't simple creatures. :) Okay, so some multi-cell creatures use asexual division. I thought it was possible. Worms and the like, fine. But a large, complex animal like a Yoshi? I don't see how it could be possible... for one how would it create an asexually-produced copy of itsself in an egg? Things that use asexual division, I would think, don't use eggs...

Sorry, it just doesn't seem possible. But it's Mario... home of humanoid mushrooms and turtles... so does it really matter? :)

ABF, you are thinking about this too hard, like asexuality instantly means dividing in half. That's not exactly what I'm suggesting for more complicated creatures. They require a lot of time to develop, more time than actually using the whole split method would allow. I'm suggesting pregnancy or egg laying, with all the seperate development that would be required.

Look, it's simple as pie. All the body need do is reproduce via normal means, except instead of depending on outside DNA, just use the existing DNA at the very basic level of reproduction, the egg level. Just make an egg with the DNA of the creature instead of half the DNA waiting for the other half to arrive. What's so hard to understand about how that could work?

As for why complicated creatures don't reproduce asexually if it's that simple, as I explained, evolution happens a lot faster via sexual reproduction. So, much more complicated systems emerged via it, so as you might imagine, all the really complicated creatures would, as a result, BE sexuallly reproducing creatures. All I'm saying is it's very possible. Just don't overthink it.

Using 'gay' as an insult is a bad thing that is depressingly popular... it's insulting and demeaning to gay people and "even if I didn't mean it that way" I'm sure actual gay people would take it that way.
