So, the House is voting right now on its 14th ballot for Speaker. McCarthy may win this ballot and finally be Speaker, or he may very narrowly fall short, but it is looking more likely he might manage it either in this ballot or soon. However, he got to this point by fully surrendering on just about every possible issue to the raving psychos of the Freedom Caucus, Kevin McCarthy may be about to become speaker... but he loses either way, because if he does get in he will have an absolutely miserable two years, if he even lasts that long. The emboldened Freedom Caucus will make regular life in the House incredibly difficult. It'll be a miracle if we don't default on our national debt, unless somehow their blockage can be worked around... unless we try the 'you can't actually default on the debt' concept, but who knows if that's legal.
And with Democrats holding the Senate and Presidency, the House's bitter infighting and inability to do anything will be extremely apparent to anyone paying any attention to politics. Even if he wins, McCarthy will hate his job as speaker...
But apparently, all he cares about is getting that office. He doesn't care how awful a time he has AS Speaker, he just wants to be Speaker of the House and to be able to say in the future that he was Speaker of the House. Whatever self-serving book full of absolute nonsense he writes some day wil be utterly insufferable, and a pack of lies if he tries to pretend that his essential strategy, both with Trump and the Freedom Caucus, is not to 1) surrender on all issues and then 2) privately complain about it, as if this matters in any way given that #1 is the important part.
