Mozilla is making a huge mistake, but I don't think that's what the other browser makers are going to do. For one thing, watch people flee from Firefox to another compilation of the same browser that removes the advertising. I don't think either Google or MS would risk angering such a wide audience.
(From my experience, Firefox is going back to "niche" status, with most of the people I know hearing "Chrome is better" from their kids. The kids are assumed to know what they are talking about because, as the popular wisdom would have it, kids are tech wizards by default.)
