I'd recommend doing what I had to do at one point and examining the drive bay of your PSP very carfully. Mine suffered the same symptoms caused by a single human hair that had managed to wedge itself in the gear assembly. Removing it fixed it good as new and it still works to this day.
That said, you may not be so lucky. You may want to look into hacking your PSP and ripping all your UMDs (or finding copies in "the usual way"). The games run a lot quicker (as in load times) when done that way. There's also third party SD card adapters to drastically enhance storage space. My PSP is a streamlined little machine now.
I recently obtained the GBA versions of DKC 2 and 3. While the visuals are cropped, washed out, and noticeably less detailed, I appreciate some of the extra content. I also very much appreciate a very Wise addition to DKC3's soundtrack.
