In fact I do. I also recall something about him being able to run faster uphill than down in at least one game, but I forget which one. I do know that to measure Mario's speed they went by "blocks per second" as the measurement.
The funny thing is I remember a few interviews with Miyamoto in that player's guide (back when player's guides were frickin' GUIDES) where he says it's not like people ever recognize him or anything. I wonder if that's changed by now.
