Actually, they have. Link is a fusion of all the seperate Links in the timeline, for example. DK is also apparently a fusion of DKC's DK and ol' Cranky Kong in his prime (the original). Captain Falcon's moves were invented out of whole cloth. Ness can use moves only Paula knew in Earthbound.
This is standard stuff. Nintendo DOES seem to care about the Zelda storyline, but that care stops with Super Smash Bros, and that's the way I likes it. I like this interpretation.
In fact I'd have to say that even saying they are toys probably isn't "cannon". I think it's more like the power of imagination.
Oh, speaking of, I hope they do the old style intros with Falcon riding into battle in his car and Mario coming up from a pipe. SSBM just had them beam in, and it wasn't as "they totally paid attention to the details".
