You've probably seen it already in the news, but the upcoming Nintendo Power shows the New SMB for release on May 7th. There hasn't been a new 2-D Mario for quite some time, but this one looks like its going to catch up on that. It's a mixture of Mario 64 and Sunshine graphics and art styles with gameplay taken from every Mario game and streamlined in to a completely new experience. What excites me the most is that the ability to grow and the fireflowers are back, not to mention the level of difficulty returning to its roots, leave it to Nintendo to remmind us why we love Mario.

In other news, happy 20th birthday Link! :D

Super Princess Peach and New Super Mario Brothers, both this year... and we haven't seen a new Mario-themed platformer (not including Wario) since Yoshi's Story... or a new platformer starring Mario since 1992's Mario Land 2... or one from EAD since 1991's SMW... (since ML2 was made by the mostly-handheld division, R&D1, who also made the 2d Metroid games, most of the Wario stuff, etc...)

I'm more looking forward to this new Mario game actually... I know it's not as unique as Super Princess Peach appears to be, but I want that retro feel all over again, plus I want to see if this is actually more unique than we may have been led to believe.

ABF, why aren't you counting the 3-D mario platformers?

    !!!!!1!

    I haven't played a 2D Mario game since Yoshi's Island (or does Yoshi's Story count?). I can't wait.:D

It looks really cool, plus on the touch screenn you can horde powerups and then activate them by pressing them with your finger (they're huge). So far i've only seen the Mushroom and the Fireflower but I see exclamationn mark blocks which could mean that the caps from Mario 64 are back, i'm expecting some kind of flight powerup, whether it's Racoon, Cape, Wing Cap or anything else they can think of.

imo, if this game is what I THINK it is, it should have been the game that launched the DS. Not Mario 64 DS. I'm really, seriously, praying, wanting, hoping, dreaming, that Nintendo put a two player simultaneous feature like in SMB Deluxe for GBC in this game. It wont kill me if its not there, but that feature was so awesome it would make the game 100 times better if it is.

I'm also expecting 'I'm sorry Mario, but our princess is in another castle!" as well as the classic axe and drawbridge :D When i saw the movies of this, Mario was performing all his moves frm Mario 64 as well as a few moves from SMW (corkscrew jump). Yunno come to think of it, the boss battles might involve the stylus in some way

However, if it "involves the stylus" in the same way as Dawn of Sorrow, then they might as well skip it.

Because I was talking about 2d platformers (this includes New SMB of course, as the actual gameplay is 2d)... should have been clear from context I think.

    Anyway, both games look great...

Well you said you hadn't seen an SMB platformer, etc. So I was wondering. I mean as fun as I know the New SMB will be, Mario Sunshine has been hands down my favorite Mario game of all time.

I agree, mostly, (with the article), though at least they try to justify it (by saying that the island increases emotions)... (read the article) I'm sure they didn't mean any harm, but using stereotypes in a game supposedly meant to combat them seems a bit odd.

The reported easy difficulty level is also dissapointing, of course, but easy platformers can be fun too... just see Kirby 1 for the GB. :)

The touch screen has pictures of four moods on it, when you touch one she gains an ability for a short period of time. Tap the angry face and things explode in fire around her. Tap the sad face and jets of tears sprout from her face. This may sound familiar to those of you who are in long-term relationships or married.

    hahahaha

They also say its one of the best 'Mario' games to come along in a while and i know Minka will love it so i'll be picking it up, especially with a $35 price. I think the sexism is far fetched; she's a princess, not Samus Aran.
