This guy is actually one of the "good guys" it seems. He actively admits that his hypnosis pretty much is what that above link describes it to be. It would seem he always targets particularly suggestible people to begin with and does in fact give a cue to them to let them know someone is trying to hypnotize them. So, it wasn't staged, but it wasn't the sort of hypnosis the common person thinks of either. Just easily suggestible people playing roles they have learned.
