So it was either changed to cover for releasing more info than they should, or because they have not finalized the storage medium so they don't want to say what it is. Or they just don't want to say yet and will at E3... :)

(From the "first facts on Revolution" thread)

"Unlike GameCube, the new system will play DVD's", Ms. Kaplan said, "and will feature a wireless controller. It will play GameCube games as well as a new class of high-definition games, with new emphasis on online play".

There's some more quotes like that that basically state that the Revolution will be using HD-DVD.

Lazy, hi-def is referring to screen resolution and aspect ratio. Just like the XB360, which is all about the "HD revolution". Hi-definition standards for all games, and I imagine Nintendo will be doing the same.

There's also the point that HD-DVD is probably not going to make it to the market, since they are going to join blue ray to make a single high-capacity next-generation dvd format.

Blu-ray isn't making it to market either, probably, so that point doesn't really matter...

    Erm

The people behind HD-DVD are working together with blu-ray so that there will be only one next-generation dvd format. But basically, it'll be blu-ray. It's the superior format.

We'll see exactly what happens, but yes, that is a likely possibility.

Anyway, my point was that Blu-Ray probably won't be coming out in its current form either, so saying that HD-DVD won't be is only saying part of the story.

    It'll be more blu-ray than HD-DVD.

Blu-Ray does look like the better tech, so that's likely... though HD-DVD had a price advantage that some companies liked, so I'd expect that for this fusion to succeed they'd need to bring down the price.

Where did you hear that bluray and HD-DVD is combining? When we (consumers) get introduced to a new format it's called a booked format. CD's are blue book I think and it's because every major company has to litteraly sit down and decide what the format will be but no one actually owns the format. For example, there is no one company that gets a % off of every CD sale, any CD sale, because they own the 'CD patent'. So no one company can own the format.

Sony on the other hand is trying their best to do it with bluray and those horrible little memory sticks. but if you heard the formats are being combined, that means in reality they've settled on a booked format and that means no one owns it.

Sony and Toshiba are trying to come to an agreement. From what I've heard Sony is being stubborn and basically wants the new format to be Blu-Ray. What we'll probably get is Blu-Ray but it will be called HD-DVD.

Whatever the new format is I doubt Nintendo will use it. It would increase the cost of the system quite a bit I believe.

I think Nintendo will go with a proprietary format that is very similar to DVD.

Yeah, both Sony and the HDDVD people know that if they both enter the market with two separate formats, it's going to be SACD vs. DVDA all over again. And how many SACDs or DVDAs do any of you have? Exactly. They know that the public will not switch to a new format if there are two competiting choices, with different movie studios sticking to one or the other.

Perhaps what Nintendo could do it pull a Sega and make a slightly higher-capacity DVD-ROM. Maybe up the amount to 15 GB or something. But the original press release said "standard dvd", so I think that'll probably be it.
