Quote:TOKYO, April 6 (Reuters) - Japanese videogame maker Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) on Wednesday raised its net profit forecast by 17 percent on foreign exchange gains and said it would pay a record270 yen dividend for the year just ended.

Nintendo, known for game characters such as Mario, Donkey Kong and Pokemon, said it nearly doubled its dividend payment because it now expected to post a net profit of 82 billion yen ($757.4 million) in the year ended in March, compared with its previous forecast of 70 billion yen.

It comforts me to know Nintendo still makes a lot of money. It's what makes me think we won't see a Sega situation happen anytime in the near future.

As long as Nintendo is making money, they won't be going anywhere.

Yes, it's good to know... though isn't it making less money than it has in the past, overall?

Yeah, I don't think it's as much as during their heyday, but it's still nothing to scoff at, and they still have a chunk of change in the bank.

Yeah, they've got around 4-5 billion sitting in the bank and besides 700 million is pretty good for a company that operates in just one market.

Don't forget they're entering the anime industry too. There's lots of money to be made all around.

Yeah, if they do well as a movie studio... that isn't gauranteed (remember FF: The Spirits Within?).

Well FF: TSW was a very different situation. It was a very expensive movie to make. I doubt your average anime movie is that expensive. And then the movie just plain sucked. Oh and the fact that it had absolutly NOTHING to do with Final Fantasy didn't help.

Nothing to do with Final Fantasy? Why not? Every FF game is a different series, after all... that is, before last year or so...

While almost every FF is different there are similarities and common elements. None of the FF's that I know of are straight sci-fi, they all have magic and a certain fantasy "feel". And the moogles, can't forget the moogles.

True... it wasn't a totally awful movie, just not as good as it could have been... and yes, you're right that most FF's are either straight fantasy or mixed fantasy/scifi, but given that it covers both of those categories, why not some straight scifi as well...

Nintendo is still the most profitable game developer out there. Whether the made the same money as back in their heyday, I don't know, but they're making more money than everyone else who "claim" more market share anyways.

Yeah well, maybe when the title was originally coined, it was some engrish translation for some Japanese phrase, or a literal engrish translation that doesn't really make sense like the rest of Japanese Engrish.

I thought the story was that Square was on the verge of closing so they thought it might be their final game...

Quote:The History of Final Fantasy. The Vice-President of Square Enix of today, Hironobu Sakaguchi, who is also the creator of Final Fantasy, tells the story of how it all began. In 1987, a small videogame developer/company called Square Ltd. was on a verge of bankruptcy. So they decided to make their "Final" game that they want to make: a game that tells an epic story. They hoped that this game would somehow save the company. Thus, the game was named "Final Fantasy"

    Well..

..there were some elements that are present in most games. But it was too far of a variation. Very westernized, and very commercial.

Advent Children on the other hand is looking... mmmmm... oh so delicious.
If i had a dollar for every time i ran out of hair in the middle of a spoon making contest id only eat your children with a side of slaw and THOSE ARENT PILLOWS!!

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within cost about 170 million dollars, while the average anime movie with a good budget is somewhere around 10-15 million. Lot of difference there.

It still had a lot of Japanese people working on it, including both directors.

The reason they were working in HAwaii is because, if you check a map, it's pretty frickin' close to both American and Japan. I mean, midway would be an even better mid point, but um... there are reasons people don't go there...

Actually, yes, that was exactly why... Honestly, I knew I didn't even get close to telling that joke saying it that way there, but you managed to actually get it! What luck!
