Kirby is out!

I'll be getting it on wednesday or whenever BB or CC gets it in. Only $21 after the coupon, woo!

It's been getting good reviews, and the only complaint I've heard is that the Super Metroid-like gameplay (woo!) doesn't lend itself as well to Kirby (crap!) since you have to use temporary powers to gain access to new areas, not permanent ones like in SM. But still, I can't wait to get my hands on it!

Hmm... a Metroid-like layout? Interesting, but I can see how it wouldn't work as well with Kirby. I like traditional sidescrollers so I don't mind them being more linear... maybe make them more inventive, but a normal sidescroller is fine with me if it's good. That's not to say the Metroid style is bad or anything, it is quite definitely not... I'm just saying that both ways are good. So while one Kirby game like this is fine -- and could be good, though having to keep re-getting powers you use to get to places could get annoying -- I don't think I'd like it that way for all of them.

Unless, of course, the ones designed like that were as good as Super Metroid while traditional side-scrollers were on the level of Kirby 64... :)

Hatred is wrong. Mediocricy is more accurate. Dissapointment is most accurate. It was my first impression of the game and it's stuck... but GGA is just so much better!

On that issue, I wonder... can you fly forever in this game? What about powerups? Is there any system of combinations (either by way of multiple powerups like K64 or friends like Kirby 2)? Do minibosses move? And how many hidden crystals do you have to find to get the really final boss? :D

Metroid-ish eh?

That reminds me of The Great Cave Offensive. It was my favorite of the 8 games they made for Kirby Super Star for a reason. It was basically one large circle of a world that was very Metroid like. You used the various powers you had to smash barriers, and had to find secret places, and all that rot. Plus, the collectibles were hidden in all sorts of ingenious ways. It was fun finding things like "Springtime" (which of course is the actual season in material form :D) or the whole freaking Triforce. My second fave was the space one, I forget what that was called, but it was sorta like Megaman because by touching special statues you actually learned the abilities PERMANENTLY and could summon them at will from a Megaman style weapon menu. Actually, Kirby could no longer get most powers by eating monsters, just the special "supers" like Cookerate, or Ultima.

That one was called Milkyway Wishes. I liked both it and the Great Cave Offensive for the challenge and I liked Dynablade and Revenge of Metaknight for when I just wanted to play a game from beginning to end in a matter of hours.

Hours, plural? :D Metaknight has a time limit that's less than one hour I believe :D.

Dynablade was fun. It had an overworld map but only two secret levels.

But if you just want to beat the karp out of King Deedeedee, you PLAY the first one.

Also, it's fun to play those mini-games that test Kirby's speed and power. You know, the reflex one where Kirby pies Deedeedee in the face faster than the speed of light, and the timing one where you summon all your strength to shatter giant stone blocks, oh and also split the whole frickin' planet in twain (to the cheers of the audience, which for some reason has TWO Marios in it, thanks to lazy background mirroring :D).

I like the relay between Kirby and King Dedede too.

As for Dynablade and Revenge of Metaknight... combined, they're a total of... maybe two hours at the most. Depends on how many times you have to use the restroom.

That hardly counts as playtime...

The Relay Race was fun, though it must have been during Kirby's slower days, since he could totally beat The Flash in a race if he felt like it now.

Seriously, Great Cave Offensive and Milky Way Wishes were likely the main reason they made the game. The rest seems to be icing :D. Great Cave Offensive took me a LONG time, I mean, I actually got STUCK and had to PUZZLE my way through a number of times :D. That's quality right there!

Yes, Great Cave Offensive and Milkyway Wishes are the real treats. Short games tend to have more replayability, but that's only because they're short. Long, challenging games like GCO and MW are more fun in the long run. Indeed, I got stumped at certain parts in both games too. That's where the fun lies: having to stop and think rather than just rush through like in Dynablade and RoM.

And yes, Kirby was rather slow back then. The relay in KSS is nothing like what goes on in Kirby Air Ride. (Though admittingly, I've never played the game. I may rent it when I have some cash. Amazing how quickly $15 can disappear... all I did was buy some food to last the day.)

I've got plenty of games to play now. And on GBA... I don't know. I definitely should get at least one of the Kirby games... the problem is that there are just so many great GBA games! I got it a few years late so I have a bunch to catch up on... I've only got 11 games now after all. :)

But if I was to choose one game I'd want to get, platformer-wise, it'd be Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

I'd much rather have Kirby. MvDK is pretty fun, but not nearly as good as the GB original.

And if you'd buy games at launch you'd save tons of money. That is, if you weren't so against buying from Best Buy and Circuit City.

I got Tribes at Best Buy... that's why it cost me $40 and not $50 like it was everywhere else. :)

I just don't get to Best Buy very often. It's a ways away (half hour trip from home, maybe 20 minuites from school to the nearest one)... much easier to get to other stores. And they only have those prices for NEW games, which I only very rarely am buying. For everything else places like EB and GameStop are clearly the only real choices.

I always buy my games from BB or CC, unless they don't have the title I'm looking for. With those $5 coupons and the awesome first-week prices they have for GBA games, I've saved a lot of money. I have well over 30 GBA games and I bought most of them for $20. :)

Well, I'd have to get games in their first week or two to make Best Buy worth buying games from much. As it is, EB and Gamestop are by far the best sources. Lots and lots of cheap, and often still quite good, games there. :)

At this point this year I don't know if I'll get anything else anytime soon. Perhaps, but it's not THAT far from Christmas... I'll probably get a game or two in December, but I don't know... I did just get a few games and you don't want to get games too close to Christmas because you don't know quite what you will get. Getting a bunch of stuff right after Christmas is always nice however...

I like having boxes and manuals, for sure, but often used, and often without either of those, is the only way to get (without ebay or something) older games that I'd like to have, so I'll live with it. The price is right too, and the game itsself is the same...

Well if you've been buying most of the games that you want for cheap when they just came out the only old games would be for the GBC or GB. :)

I've played the game for... five minutes... and it's fun so far! And yes you can fly forever.

My only gripe from these first five minutes is that I miss the power combos from Kirby 64. That just made that game so much fun.

I've played the game for a bit longer and it's a lot of fun, though I think the move to Metroid-style gameplay was a bad move. Like the reviews stated it doesn't really work when you don't get to keep your powers and upgrades, and Kirby was meant to be quick, linear fun.

It reminds me of when me and my programmer friend were coming up with ideas for our platformer (which will be released!), and since he and I both love nonlinear games he suggested that we give it a Metroid-like structure, but I decided against that knowing that I just wanted it to be a simple, fun, pick-up-and-play platformer that you could play bits of every now and again and not have to worry about where you were supposed to go, ala Metroid. Playing Amazing Mirror (as good as it is), reaffirms my decision.

But I still haven't tried multiplayer, so maybe that'll be super-friggin-awesome or something.

Make no mistake though, it's still a very fun game. I just think it would have been better in a more linear, traditional Kirby structure.

Easy way to get games on the cheap: Exploit Blockbuster's "Trade in a DVD and get $8 credit" offer. Scavenge your local pawn shops for really cheap DVDs and then trade them in for tons of credit at Blockbuster, it's like magic.

Except for one major problem. Blockbuster doesn't sell consoles or even most games! That is, not any of the ones around here. I have seen a total of 2 racks of actual new games in all the time I've been to various Blockbuster stores.

I played a bunch of multiplayer Kirby over the weekend and I can safely say that it more than makes up for the slightly dissapointing single-player experience. I've only played with one other person and it was almost as fun as Four Swords. Almost but not quite because you can't harm the other player. If Nintendo adds that in next time I'll be one happy gamer. :)

And you can buy... a little bit of stuff... without a job, if you ... okay, if you don't get many new games and get only games instead of movies or music or anything too... :) But really, about movies... most of the time IMO it doesn't really seem worth buying them. I'll only watch most things once, so why spend so much? Renting is great, but buying... I'd only buy the stuff I really like.
