I hate how so many people start Christmas season the week before Thanksgiving... darnit, it should start like a week before Christmas and last for a few weeks after!

I'm all for the "last a few weeks after" bit, but not the starting later bit! After all, it's best to have the stores full of Christmas cheer to help one during that whole month of constant shopping.

Lazy stops by to wish us Merry Christmas and you complain about Christmas starting early? Jerk.

But it's annoying how marketing keeps pushing christmas earlier and earlier and has now swallowed Thanksgiving... what's next, Halloween? :barf:

Um, all my life the Christmas season has started RIGHT after Thanksgiving. You seem to be a slave to TV telling you that everyone else is a slave to marketting.

Also, so what if they are "pushing" it? Yeesh ya grinch, are you the kind of person who sits around complaining about Christmas the whole time about how it was "invented by the industry" and "wasn't even originally a Christian holiday" and such? Who cares about the marketing? Just enjoy it!

Well given that Christmas exists because the early Christians needed a holiday on Saturnalia to help convince Romans to convert, no, it isn't a holiday of actual Christian origin. :D

And anyway, no one has a clue when Jesus was actually born...

Gee, thanks for the info EVERYONE IS FULLY AWARE OF. Yeesh, it's kinda obvious it wasn't even near winter in the Bible when Jesus was born.

Also, it's more like Christians needed a way to worship without being made into flaming street lights at the time.

easter is also not christian as it was a norse festival for the norse goddess easter, The Normans of normandy when coverted to catholiscism refused to give up Easter as it was their favorite pagan festival so someone got the wierd idea of making it a christian festival which would be in remeberance of Jesus death , It actually is not very far off from the biblical cronoligy of his cruisifiction.

but my question to you is if your atheist why do you practice a celebration which is clearly religous

Maybe partially, but also it definitely makes a religion more attractive to convert to when you don't lose your best holidays... :)

Who ever thought of putting a live tree in your house and then stick shit to it.What was the purpose of having a tree?

Really have you thought why people still continue the tradition of having a decorated tree in there house only to burn it for fire wood afterward.

Christmas trees... not sure, but midwinter festivals is a very good guess. After all, it's early Germany... cold, dark, in December you don't have much sun... you don't know if the sun will return. So in the shortest days you have some kind of festival of light... to pray for the sun to return, I guess. Seems logical that the christmas tree, bedecked in candles, comes from that...

Look ABF, we are all FULLY aware that there's very little about Christmas that was actually originated by Christans when the holiday was first adapted by them. We don't CARE though! Ya see? It's meaning has been CHANGED. The old meaning is gone now. It's irrelevent.

Yup, and now it's changed into a mostly secular holiday about giving gifts. :)

Wow, I'm shocked you are actually aware of that. Most non-Christians are convinced that Christians run the country and are trying to shove it down everyone's throats around Christmas time. Exceptional.

However, the meaning remains the same for me. Of course, you can continue to keep the old meaning yourself, but why go to EFFORT to stay unhappy?

Huh? Uh, doesn't everyone know how commercialized Christmas has become?

And also, I never said I hate Christmas... I don't... I just don't like how early it starts...

I'm with ABF on this one. I love Christmas, but I don't like how it has moved into November. And the reason I don't like that is because they are extending Christmas SOLELY for commercial reasons and I would like to celebrate Thanksgiving without hearing Christmas songs everywhere I go. At least wait until after Thanksgiving, please? Thank you for doing that, Weltall.

Eh, no matter to me. Commercials are outside my life, so I don't really care what they are focusing on at any one time. I tend not to watch much TV (I waste my life in OTHER ways thank you).

Well, it was the idea to unveil it the day after Thanksgiving, as I did the last two years. I got distracted this year :)

I personally don't particularly mind the commercial aspect of Christmas, I understand it and tolerate it, though there are definitely some times when I want to groan... "It's the HOLIDAY SEASON, AND IT'S THE PERFECT TIME FOR A NEW MUFFLER!"

Haha, yeah those are idiotic. I barely notice them though. Besides, I actually LIKE seeing stores practically dripping with little Christmas trees and various cardboard greenery hanging from the ceiling. Cheesy goodness from your neighbors at *insert store here*!

I don't mind Christmas stuff in stores either... if it's at most two weeks before Christmas, that is. Before that and it's just annoying.

And I would agree that Christmas is over-commercialized... though given the nature of the holiday (giving gifts) it was inevitable.
