    So which do you prefer?

And would any other cartoons really qualify for this list? :)

Yes, you forgot Thundercats and Voltron at least!

Why? Aren't they nothing but shows somewhat similar and vastly inferior to Transformers? :)

You've never actually.... seen... Thundercats have you? JUST ADD IT! HO! As for Voltron, it's kinda similar, but more to the Japanese original Transformers where the kids could ride inside the robots. It's actually more like Power Rangers.

    No, I haven't seen Thundercats.

    Hmm... Smurfs, maybe? :D

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show? Captain N? Or were those '90s?

And as for comparing something to Power Rangers... Power Rangers stinks. Really badly.

    Where the hell is He-Man?

I know the current version of He-Man is awful, but the original kicks rocks!

The Power Rangers used to be cool back when the show started, but after I realised they just did the same thing over and over I got tired of watching it.

Gasp! By the eye of Thundara!!

I thought of a show that needs to be added: Robotech! While I didn't get to watch it until the '90s, it's a really good '80s cartoon.

It was lame... Ninja Turtles is a thousand times better.

Are we just counting shows that aired only in the U.S. in the 80's, or cartoons from any country in the 80's? If that's the case then Z Gundam wins, hand down. It still holds up today, unlike most of those other shows. Have you seen the old TMNT lately? It's really, really bad.

I assumed that it was shows that aired here in the '80's, but ABF didn't specify wether or not that was the case.

    Quote:Z Gundam wins, hand down.

Have you ever seen Robotech? Anyway, Robotech is awesome! Way better than your silly Gundams, because the robots in Robotech can turn into jet fighters or a combination of both. Instant awesome, in my opinion.

    Erm

Z Gundam also had the whole robot-that-turns-into-a-jet-type-thingy. What it had that Robotech lacked, however, was a great story and super-keen mech designs.

I was thinking US cartoons... but whatever...

And I know that the old TMNT is corny and not great... but its still allright. Corny, mostly in a good way... :)

But I'd definitely say that Transformers held up better.

I used to love TMNT, but after seeing a few episodes recently I'm shocked that I once loved it so much. It's a really crappy show.

And I think it would be better to just include shows that aired in the U.S.

Well since Robotech was sort of an off-shoot of the original 70's Gundam show, the answer is Robotech of course.

Anyone that knows their mech anime knows that Gundam is king. You have much to learn, my very young apprentice.

NO, as in "everyone who's seen all of the good mech shows knows that Gundam is the best". GR has only seen Big O, Robotech and crappy Gundam Wing.

Quote:I meant about the mech-that-turns-into-a-jet things.

Well they both came out at the same time so.... Z Gundam. :p

Actually I've seen quite a few more than that. The actual list is: Big O, Robotech, Gundam Wing, Gundam 08th MS Team, Dai-Guard, Nadesico, Rahxephon, and all three Patlabor movies.

Quote:Well they both came out at the same time so.... Z Gundam.

I did some searching and I found that Robotech actually came out in Japan in '82. So...Z Gundam copied Robotech. :)

    Robotech

Well...Gigantor wasn't really that powerful, but he did fight evil quite often.

I've seen a few eps of various Gundams, a few of Nadiesico, the first Macross Plus episode (have the other three, haven't seen them)... and all of Escaflowne (though that's somewhat different) and most of Evangelion.

    I've seen all of:

    -Mobile Suit Gundam
    -Zeta Gundam
    -Gundam Wing
    -Gundam 08th MS Team
    -Gundam 0080
    -Gundam 0083
    -Gundam: Char's Counterattack
    -Policenauts 1 & 2

    Most of:

    -Nadesico
    -Victory Gundam
    -Gundam F91
    -Robotech
    -Big O
    -Argento Soma
    -Evangelion
    -Macross Plus
    -Escaflowne

    Some of:

    -Gigantor
    -Gundam Seed
    -Rahxephon,
    -Patlabor
    -Gasaraki
    -Hades Project Zeorymer
    -Turn A Gundam

And uh... some others that I forgot.

Quote:I did some searching and I found that Robotech actually came out in Japan in '82. So...Z Gundam copied Robotech.

Oh, I forgot about the Gundam novels by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino. He wrote a bunch of them in between and during the series, and I believe one of pre-Robotech ones had robots-into-jets mechs.

And besides, Robotech was just a robot soap opera while the good Gundam series were serious robot war epics. And they had much better mech designs.

    (shows with mechs)

    All
    -Escaflowne

    Most
    -Evangelion (seen first 18 eps)

    Some
    -Nadiesco (first three eps)
    -Gundam 0080 (3-5 assorted eps)
    -Macross Plus (ep.1)
And one or two eps of some other Gundam show that I forget the name of.

Isn't Macross Robotech? Did Macross Plus not come out over here or something?

But it's true!! Gundam Wing is a pathetic shell of the original Gundam series. It's like the stupid younger sister of the Gundam family. At least Gundam G went crazy with the action thing and didn't try to be like MSG. Wing tried to be like MSG but failed miserably.

Quote:I still stand by my opinion that Robotech is an awesome series.

And I agree with you! It's a cool show. Just not Gundam cool. Cool

Macross is one of the Robotech series, yes. But then there were Macross movies and OVAs that got rid of the Robotech name, like Macross Plus.

Those cartoons are really early childhood for me, like 4-5 years old... mostly I watched Carebears, TMNT and GI Joe back then, as far as English cartoons go anyway. Also ate up Disney stuff, like Ducktales, Rescue Rangers and Tailspin. Later on (around 8-9) I was mostly into Captain Planet and Power Rangers. Transformers never did anything for me, and I never even heard of He-Man until I read about it on the internet.

Captain Planet... now THAT was a really bad show. I always thought that it was one of the lamest shows ever... and I always disliked TaleSpin. Ducktales and Rescue Rangers were cool, though...

Anyone remember Rainbow Brite? Just me? Okay then.

Anyway, Thundercats was COOL, because it was like, all cat like, and it was all like "we have magic in space". I thought that the sight beyond sight was cool, and I wanted that! Plus, it had Mum-ra! He was so evil they cancelled the show because of him! Well, he did kinda pray to ancient spirits of evil to boost his own power on a regular basis. Not a single giant robot to be found there ABF by the way. Plus, those Lunatics were cool. They broke Lion-O's sword. And Cheetara was cool, because she's all like, fast. And um, that's about it.

I wish the Japanese Transformers had been aired here instead of the other thing. I liked Transformers, even though I only saw like 10 episodes at most. I remember the one with dinobots. That was cool, because dinosaurs are cool. ALL of them! Rex egg protection attack pattern something-or-other! Then, a big rock came along...

    What's Weltall doing up there?

Well, that was actually what the US Transformers was based on. Kinda odd that the leader of the autobots, a giant semi-truck, is from good ol' Japan. All I know is what others have told me, but apparently the kids in the Japanese version occasionally actually piloted the Transformers. I have no idea why they decided to actually make a brand new series for us in the US instead of just translating the Japanese one though.

As far as I can determine our Transformers IS the original series, not a new series based on a previous one. There is, however, a newer series, that, if I remember correctly, is similar to what you are describing.
