Quote:Pikmin 2, the sequel to Nintendo's hit simulation title Pikmin, could be in for a great big delay. The title, formerly scheduled for a "Q4 2003" release date, has been pushed to May 1, 2004, according to numerous credible electronics retailers.

We contacted Nintendo of America to confirm the rumors but the company did not return our queries in time for publish.

Pikmin 2 situates players as space hero Olimar and his new pal Loojie as the duo travels to a planet infested by small creatures called Pikmin who act out orders like Lemmings. Players must orchestrate the Pikmin to defeat foes, build canals, dig through wall barriers, and more, in a real-time-strategy-like fashion. The first title received high praise for its intuitive blend of action and RTS mechanics and the sequel, complete with a two-player cooperative mode, looks every bit as poised to garner similar marks.

We all know that Nintendo delay games, but seven months?! And it isn't even that big of a game! I suppose it's possible they have something big planned for it, but marketting seems a more likely cause.

This is very depressing. So that means that ZERO new EAD games will have been released in 2003 (I count WW as a 2002 release since it was released in Japan then). What the hell are they up to???!!

Mario Kart DD is an NCL game, right?

I know for certain that 1080 isn't, but I'm still not quite sure about Mario Kart.

Mario Kart is from EAD. I got that information from Beth Llewelyn at Nintendo.

Ah, well that settles that then.

So that's one EAD game this year. The biggest developer in the world is only releasing one game this year... very sad.

So, what exactly is EAD up to? Super-secret games? N5 launch titles? Maybe...just maybe...

IGN is reporting that the delay is official:

Quote:September 04, 2003 - Earlier this week we reported that Pikmin 2, the sequel to Nintendo's hit simulation title Pikmin, could be delayed into next year.

Today Nintendo confirmed reports. The game is now officially set for a Q2 2004 release date.

"The launch date for Pikmin 2 has moved to Q2 2004 to ensure the final product meets the high standards that Nintendo fans deserve," stated Nintendo.

IGNcube will have more on Pikmin 2 as details become availabl

Wipeout 64 was published by MIDWAY. It was, however, developed by Psygnosis, which at the time had been bought by Sony... how Psygnosis managed to convince Sony to let them publish, even with a different publisher, a N64 game I don't know. Maybe they hadn't been owned by Sony for long or something?

I'm pretty sure that Sony published the game in Europe, but Midway might have ended up publishing it. I do know for a fact that Sony was originally going to publish the game in Europe with Psygnosis publishing it in the states, though.

When you boot the US version of the game, it is quite clear that Psygnosis is the developer and Midway the publisher.

Well you said Sony published it in Europe, you think, but sounded unsure... it'd be very interesting if Sony published it in Europe. I had thought that they let Psygnosis release it but wouldn't sell it themselves, like Lemmings Revolution and Rollcage II for PC...

They were originally going to publish the game in Europe, but I left before it came out there so I'm not sure if they ended up doing it.

Wipeout 1 also came out for the Saturn, you know. Although I believe that was before Sony snatched up Psygnosis.

Here, look. I found the news article from ign which shows that Sony was originally going to publish WO64 in Europe:

Quote:September 03, 1998 - Midway Home Entertainment today announced that it has secured the publishing rights to Psygnosis' upcoming cyber racer, Wipeout 64.

Psygnosis was originally planning to publish the title, with Sony Music Entertainment taking over distribution duties in Europe. The announcement of publishing powerhouse Midway handling the distribution and publishing of Wipeout ensures that the game will not be in short supply when it launches this November.

Gary Johnson, managing director of Psygnosis, commented, "We're pleased to find a distribution partner who will build on the work done to date and one who is well positioned to fulfill the game's retail potential. We will be continuing our efforts to grow the Wipeout brand across a variety of platforms and to a broad audience."

Psygnosis and Midway did not disclose whether the publishing deal was limited to Wipeout 64, or whether future Psygnosis titles for N64, such as O.D.T., would also be included.

The announcement follows on the heels of industry rumors about disagreements between the Sony-owned Psygnosis and its parent company about potential N64 publishing plans.

All I want to know is why Sony published a game on the other console...

Oh, and yeah, Wipeout 1 was before Sony bought it I am pretty sure.

Why not publish it? The game was headed for the N64 so they might as well profit from it.

Yeah, but its on the direct competition's console, with a game in one of their console's biggest serieses! Its a bit ... odd. Even if the game IS finished.

For example, I'd be stunned if Microsoft releases those PS2 and NGC copies of High Heat 2004, despite the fact that the thing is finished and well might even be printed...

I forgot the details of why WO64 came out for the N64, but it did and Sony was able to profit from an N64 game.

Hmm. It looks like Pikmin 2 may be a launch title for Nintendo's next offering. That, or Nintendo is beefing the game up; the pictures I remember seeing for Pikmin 2 looked identicle to the first one. And online play is definately something to consider.

There's a billion ways to play it online and it wouldn't be that much to add on in order to do so.

Online support would make it worth the wait, but I seriously hope they don't delay it to an N5 launch. The N5 won't be out until the end of 2005, at the earliest.

Yeah, 2005 would be way too long for this game... I just really hope that this is a features delay and not one of those stupid 'the game is done but we're waiting until a schedule opening comes up' delays... :(

The thing is that they need the game real badly this holiday season. If MGS gets delayed that means that Nintendo will have one exclusive game for the entire holiday season.

I guess Nintendo really likes that number three spot. :S

Yeah, I know quality is very important, but they needed to plan better! Realize that many games are going to be delayed and do something to make it so you still have a good first/second party lineup out for the holidays... as it is it doesn't seem nearly as good as it should be for a company trying to catch up.
