It amazes me how hackers are always one step ahead of microsoft with these cat and mouse games, and how incredibly intelligent they are for figuring out such an obscure vulnerability and releasing the information publicly on July 4th. That's a huge FU to Microsoft.

As for having a big effect on the Xbox, you bet it does. You can bet Xbox sales will skyrocket in the next few weeks. The only problem about that is, Microsoft will lose money on each Xbox sold and will not make as much money on video games due to a rise in piracy. Plus there are loopholes in the law that make this legal. Since it does not involve flashing a modchip with illegal software, you have the right to hack the Xbox as long as you don't pirate games. Installing linux and legitimate digital media on the Xbox is legal and now easier than ever.
