Famicom and Super Famicom that is. ;)

Quote:Nintendo are to stop production of the Famicom (NES) and Super Famicom (SNES) consoles in Japan this September. Nintendo will also stop doing disk-writing services for the Famicom Disk System, which was released in 1986.

While the Famicom Disk System is no longer in production the Famicom and Super Famicom have both been in production since they were first released. The Famicom went through an appearance change for it's 10th anniversary while the Super Famicom also changed it's appearance in 1998. This year will be the Famicom's 20th anniversary.

If you still wish to play Famicom games Hudson are releasing some old games on the GameCube. To find out more check the news story.

Heh heh. *grins in an evil manner*

I wasn't aware they were still selling the systems in Japan Eek!

I WAS however aware that they were still doing the service of letting anyone send in their old Famicom Disk System disks with about what would be $5 here and Nintendo would write whatever Famicom Disk System game they wanted to to the disk, so in other words people could get Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, and so on so long as they had a disk to spare this whole time!

I'm surprised they are stopping if it's been going on this long though... I wonder how long the N64 will still be selling in Japan, or if the Virtual Boy by any chance is actually still selling there?

Japan rocks... No wonder it takes such a long time for anyone to decide to do a game remake. And, Hudson is making some sort of compilation disk for GCN? Nifty.

Figure though, they can't be getting much money from them. Without new games coming out, and with ultra-superior systems pushing them off the shelves, Nintendo's probably spending more money to produce the archiac machines than they're getting back from them. I'm shocked they've been making them up until now. The NES died off before the SNES was even halfway through it's lifespan if I'm not terribly mistaken, likewise with the SNES to the N64. As for the N64? Well, it died DURING it's lifespan.

In Japan the SNES lasted well into '98, I think... maybe later. Quite a bit longer than it did here.

As for the N64... well, yeah. Seeing the last N64 game ever published come out 3 or 4 months BEFORE the Gamecube even launched tells the whole story...

Don't get me wrong, you're right. I know the N64 had it's strong points, but comparing the N64 to other consoles made, it really didn't do well. It's a good thing Nintendo came out wih Virtual Boy, otherwise N64 would have to claim that "worst console failure" award.

Oh, I love the N64, and still play some games on it (Rush 2049, Excitebike 64...) fairly frequently... its just a fact that the thing had its last game published months before the Cube came out. Has nothing to do with quality... it just says that it failed before its time. Because of cartridges...

If the N64 had been CD... sure Mario 64 and OoT might have had to have slightly smaller areas, and loadtimes every time you enter one (or in parts or something), but it'd be well worth it since it'd mean that Nintendo would still be in first...

And Final Fantasy Chronicles would probably have come out a few months back for N64, not PSX. :)

Yup. All we can hope for is their continued survival and that they don't fall into irrelevance or failure or something like previous failed hardware companies -- Atari, Sega, 3D0...

Nah, Nintendo will be around. Remember, they're Japanese, it's all about honor. It would forever disgrace Iwatas descendants if he were to let Nintendo die :).

I see a samurai battle rapidly approching between Iwata and Bill Gates.

True, honor is important to Nintendo... and tradition. But if they continue to slowly fall, in the end there won't be much they can do...

When did it become that? Looks like someone playing a game using a joystick who got WAY too hyper about it. Classic gamer :D.

I also knew of the double-entendre look of that smiley, however I couldn't find a more appropriate smiley to use to depict Bill Gates.

Well if we did, it didn't include us... I'd never have thought of that, and still definitely don't really see that as what it is.
