I thought level design was fine, Mario Land 1 may not be graphically all that nice but the gameplay's just as good (more important!), and IMO it just wasn't much less fun...
Were either of them (or the very similar Wario Land 1) as good as any of the NES or SNES games? No, I'd say probably not. But they are solid games...
Though I would say that Wario Land 1 is better than either of the previous SML games, for sure, the two SML games ARE good games. Sure SML doesn't match SMB and SML2 SMB3 or SMW... but given the limitations of the GB I'd say its quite successful.
Now if only those games had been as long as the NES/SNES games they'd be better... their shortness does really hurt. Wario Land was quite short too (over 40 levels but it sure didn't take long to get through...), but I spent a lot of time on that one trying to get all the treasures and max out the score at the end... added a lot of life to the game. And that last ending was worth it! :)
Look. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is probably my favorite GB platformer. After that, though, would come Wario Land and Kirby's Dream Land 2...
The other best GB games, IMO, would be the three Zelda games, Bionic Commando: Elite Forces (I loved that game! I think I played it through 3 or 4 times... one after another...), Final Fantasy Adventure, and a few others... probably including Micro Machines.
Look, stop trying to defend the Gameboy. Don't say "oh it's great considering the graphics capabilities of the system". Graphics have very little to do with the Gameboy's small amount of great games. Link's Awaikening is better than the NES Zeldas even though the system is inferior to the NES. It's just that very few developers didn't try hard enough to make great games for the GB.
Yup. I do consider those games in the same level of quality as SMB3. Lower down on it... but on the same level. Oh, and both of those games are better than either of the first two SML games.
The other four NES/SNES SM games are also on that level... and probably the first two GB ones, though they'd be on the low end of it.
This is another one of those debates that will never end becuase of opinionation and our extreme stuborness, however in this debate we are actually almost agreeing, but not quite.
I'm talking about you saying that Wario Land and Kirby 2 are as good as Mario 3. But whatever! If Darunia can think that Quest 64 is better than Metroid Prime, you can think that those two games are better than Mario 3.
Read what I said again! I didn't say they were AS good. I said they were GOOD. And good enough to be close to Mario 3... not its equal, for certain, but relatively close.
Oh, and OB1, stop logging off MSN! If you'd only stay online for more than 5 minuites I'd notice you are online when I checked the computer next... twice today you've left after like 5 minuites after I forgot several times to turn up the speaker volume while I was watching TV...
And to clarify, while those games may not be as good as Mario 3, they are close enough that it should be far from absurd to say that they both belong in the same class of games.
Holy flying crap, what the hell is wrong with you??! How many times do I have to repeat "It's alright but the Gameboy's software library paled in comparison to every other Nintendo system's (not including the VB, of course) library"?? Do I have to hit you over the head with a hammer a few times before you get it, or do I have to bring out the sign language again??
The original GB, IMO, had a lineup equal to at worst and probably better than the GBC's lineup. Other than that it admittedly is the "worst", but that's like saying that Star Wars is (IMO) the "worst" classic trilogy movie... it doesn't mean much.
Ok ABF. Listen up. This is going to be the very last time that I'm going to say this, so write it on a sticky note or something and put it on your monitor or your forehead. Pay close attention now:
There are a bunch of good games available for the Gameboy, but overall there aren't nearly as many good titles as there are for the NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy Advance, and Gamecube!!!
If you make me repeat this one more time I'm going to drive over to your house and hit you over the head with a frying pan.
I'm arguing about other things: Game Boy Color, mainly. That, and how your "dont like as much" comes out as a fairly strong "its so much worse that it barely deserves to be a game in the series" about the Mario Land games... because to me that IS what saying how they are WAY worse than all the other Mario platformers sure comes out to me... and I disagree.
Oh, I'd also say that the N64 is, so far, still better than the Cube. Not that the Cube isn't great... it is. But it just doesn't match the N64, especially in multiplay...
I never once said that it sucked ass or anything like that. I always say compared to, which somehow manages to slip by you each and every friggin' time.
Did you watch Adult Swim last night? Those were some hilarious eps of Harvey Birdman, ATHF, Sealab, and of course Space Ghost (old ep, but a great one).
I think they are supposed to come out on DVD this Fall.
I'm going to try to get all of them or if they just have something like the Adult Swim Collection I'll get that.
It's hard to believe that Cartoon Network, the station that shows more anime than most other stations combined [and really good ones] and makes some of the greatest American cartoon series, started out showing series borrowed from other companies and old Bugs Bunny cartoons. They've definitely made progress.
Yes indeed. I'd love to see an Adult Swim-type channel from them. All mature anime and cartoons all day long.
Also, they mentioned last week that Space Ghost was going to be on the DVD (the long versions), so hopefully it won't just be a cheap little mixed collection. I want all of the episodes in order, damnit!
