How did they ever secure the rights from Jim Davis for this? Wink

I'm guessing they didn't, but that Jim Davis doesn't do anything that would threaten the Garfield brand, like sue fans making parodies.

He's specially crafted Garfield to be a comic that reaches "everybody", and to that end, it's a comic that can never "say" anything. Heck he hasn't actually written it in years. He's got a "bible" of sorts of do's and don'ts, and his staff just go by that when writing new comics. Somehow though, I think there's some deep dark part of him that enjoys these twisted interpretations. That nightmare comic where Garfield's been abandoned to start to death, that came from somewhere, and that was back when he was still writing it.

I know I'd take great delight in someone taking a creation of mine and going off the rails with it, especially if it were dark. Garfield seems more meme-able than any other strip. Such as editing out all of Garfield's thought bubbles to watch how crazy Jon truly is, or Garfield without Garfield. I guess it's so well-known that it just spreads when people have fun with it.

I'll say this: the old Garfield and Friends cartoon has aged surprisingly well. If I'm having trouble sleeping, sometimes I'll put on old cartoons and nod off. Lorenzo Music's deadpan, sarcastic humor is on point. The writing is actually pretty decent for a kid's TV show. Maybe Garfield helped breed a generation of sarcastic cynics. Something sure did...

Boomers bred a generation of sarcastic cynics. Literally and figuratively.

I love the Garfield and Friends cartoon. My niece has started watching it and fell in love. The 3D cartoon never quite captured that fun.

Lorenzo Music, he played Bill Murray's character on The Real Ghostbusters, then Garfield in the cartoon, then later Bill Murray plays Garfield in the (terrible) movie. (True story, Bill Murray was told "The Coen Brothers" were making Garfield, and that's what made him sign on. HE found out too late it was a totally different set of brothers Coen, so yeah, he was lied to. Can you imagine if the Coens DID write Garfield though? Oh wow, that would have been amazing. Garfield as The Dude, oh yes please!

Garfield and Jon try unsuccessfully to break into the safe at Mama's Pizzeria across the street (Garfield is too busy scarfing down pizzas to help Jon), then they kidnap Mama instead and try to hold her for ransom, before realizing that she has no living relatives. Odie, played by Steve Buscemi, gets shot dead by the police. Rated R.
