This is the first time I've watched HSR. Is it supposed to be a string of non-sequiturs set to animation, or is something wrong with my browser?

The jokes are funnier if you already know the show/characters. I could see it being confusing and annoying if it's the first time you've seen it.

Start with the e-mails. Specifically, look up "cool guy" where Senor Cardgage is introduced.

If you don't know who any of these weird animal people are, I bet it's probably not that funny.

SBE-mails are basically a "did you ever notice how" standup act in cartoon form.

Uncidentally, I think http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail150.html is what the ending of Chrono Cross was all about... It's as good an explanation as any for that weird Schala speech...

If you REALLY want a bunch of nonsequiters...

    http://www.homestarrunner.com/dween_cakes.html

That should confuse you into laughing.

    Then the... ahem... "explanation"...

    http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail72.html

And if you slogged through all that, here's why the word "fan" ruins all other words by association.
