If you remember the story about the woman in NYC who left her kid alone on the subway so that he could find his way home, she's back, and she explains herself extremely well.

I remember being among those who thought she was insane, but the more I think about it now, the more I believe she did the right thing, and that her parenting logic is amazing.

I'll say what I said when this first came up, she knows her son better than anyone else and knows what he's capable of, but there's still a risk there in doing what she did.

There's a risk involved every time you walk out your front door. No sense staying indoors every day because there's a risk the branch on the tree in your yard might snap off and fall on you. The entire concept parents have of thinking every other person on the planet is out to molest their child is simply media-fueled paranoia, and nothing more. Do those people exist? Certainly they do, but the risk that something will happen to your child is negligible, and probably relatively the same whether you're with them or not. I applaud this woman and think she should be upheld as a model for all the overprotective mothers in the world smothering their children instead of letting them live their life.

Little Izzy is probably going to grow up to be more responsible, mature, and successful than his peers who cannot leave their mothers side until they hit 18.

There's a difference between "I'm afraid of letting my 9 year old out of the house" and "I'm afraid of leaving my 9 year old alone in NYC to ride the subway home". There's "over-protective" and then there's "protective", they aren't the same. Again, she knows her son and apparently this is what he wanted to do, so I don't think this woman should be dragged out into the street and shot, but it's not something that I'd feel comfortable with doing.
