I fear we very likely have reached the point of russian attacks wherein we need to impose one of those "e-mail security checks" for new users... Anyone agree?

Yeah, we need some kind of checks in place to make sure that real people are registering.

It is done. What concerns me is there is another option requiring a user to fill out a series of numbers in a randomly generated image file, and it was already set to "yes". I wonder if it's working? I'll test that now.

Well I tested it and image verification is in fact already working. What concerns me is the e-mail verification is NOT working. It seems we don't have the proper server code in place to send an e-mail to an address.

My concern is that with the image verification, there's no real way short of a sophisticated image recognition program for them to actually use a bot to continue registering. I'm pretty sure we actually ARE dealing with human beings taking the time out of their day to register and then spam us. As such, an e-mail verification, aside from appearing not to work (I'll revert it in a moment), wouldn't hold them out.

Instead here's my suggestion. We confirm each individual user. It's a little extreme, but it's not like a lot of new members are storming us every day. After a month, we can shut it off and see if they leave us alone or something. I dunno...

I had this problem with the forums I run for my classroom, and I ended up having to put a security question in that asked the new user what my classroom number was. It totally eliminated the problem so maybe if we have email verification it will stop the problem.
