Okay wow... I knew those things spun fast but... Alright, so like about 5 minutes ago, I was installing an old game on my PC when I heard a loud "pop" like a fire cracker and then my computer was making some weird noise. I thought something major just burst so I shut the whole thing down. Turns out, upon starting it up, it was the disk reader. I took out the drive and pried it open to find... the shattered remains of Disk 1. I mean SHATTERED. I have no idea what happened but I blame spirits.

Nope. I heard the explosion, but nothing before that. It's as if it was spinning so fast the centrifugal forces just built and built until it couldn't take any more, and when a seam finally made itself known, that's all it took to blow the thing apart.

Now I did hear some aweful noises AFTER the "BANG".

Oh, here's an update. The drive is busted now. Apparently the shards shot all over the inside of the thing and messed up some stuff in there pretty bad. I replaced it with an older drive, and I can still read DVDs, but for a while I can't burn anything so backups will need to wait... That drive is fairly new too. Fortunatly it's still under warrentee and I'm pretty sure breaking a disk which breaks the drive is covered. Too bad they don't sell this game any more... Upsetting really...

Apparently sometimes the pieces shoot out the disk tray, which is about eye level where I'm sitting, so one could say I'm lucky. One COULD say that, if they forget my CD just exploded taking out my disk drive, which didn't have to happen.

It would seem that this just... occasionally happens. I'm not sure I like that. Now I'll be afraid to put ANY CD into a drive. I don't know!

    Disc 1 of what?

I had a CD explode in the drive once, years back... poor disc 2 of Baldur's Gate... :(

We had to replace the drive.
