I have found this out the hard way.

As it turns out, there seems to be a widepread problem with updating to the latest Media Player if you already have Media Connect installed. Basically, the media sharing functionality dies.

In summery: My PC can still see my 360, but my 360 can't see my PC any more (worked perfectly until I upgraded).

If you never installed Media Connect and just straight installed the latest Media Player, you should be fine.

MS really needs to fix this bug... It's annoying...

I have largely quit using windows in favor of Ubuntu for about the past six months. It can do the same things windows can--browse the internet, watch/listen to media, hook up to an ipod or thumb drive, use office, etc. Without the massive bloat that every application you install to windows adds. Whenever you install any major application in windows it integrates itself with your computer like some kind of evil tree digging its roots into your computer. Everytime I install something I get to play the uncheck-all-the-boxes-game so that I don't have eighty processes making my computer take 5 minutes to boot. Then there's viruses, and in their effort to make computers as accessible as possible microsoft designs all their programs for dummies, using helpful wizards and paperclips to guide you through basic tasks.

You can even download internet explorer on ubuntu for website that require it! It's great. Plus, you can always dual boot and use windows when you HAVE to have it for games or something that is very windows exclusive. So, in conclusion, I will be sure not to upgrade media player.

I'm not sure what the point is. Other than this, my Windows installation works fine, and it's all about the games for me. It just seems a little pointless to "duel boot" for something like that.

Nooo, you dual boot out of principle to stick it to the giant company, and because linux does almost all the exact same things with a little bit of learning. But I can definetely see how the average user doesn't care enough to go through the frustration of learning something else when what they have works just fine...

That's sort of the point. Out of principle doesn't do anything for me :D, and MS doesn't care so long as I have their OS. Besides, I had linux installed for a time, but really I never used it "primarily" because I liked having my games a touch away without a restart.

Anyway, here's the solution to my problem. I turned off the media sharing service, deleted all the DRM files from my media player folder, and turned it back on. It recreated them in updated form and that solved the problem just fine. I just had to reshare the right forms.

I've used several versions of Linux a bit over the years, and I'm sure once you get used to it it's okay, but I don't mind Windows, and have to use Windows anyway to actually use any programs, so I've never felt a need to put Linux on my computer.

And besides, it'd require me to use up a perfectly good chunk of hard drive space! :)
