    Jaguar Part II! :)

Both the Jaguar and Jaguar CD are indeed well known for their unreliablity. Really, their reliability records are poor at best. Just look at the base Jaguar -- the signs of cheapness are everywhere. Note the lack of cart door, open back connections, etc. Add a CD drive full of moving parts to that and it's no surprise that a lot of them don't work. Just check Atari-Age, there's plenty more on it there, and likely help for those broken Jag CD drives of his, too.

Anyway, pretty good episode... not perfect, but pretty good. Too bad about the Jag CDs though, hopefully something can be done, with how much they cost and how few of them there are! :)

That was probaily due to cost cutting, The Jaguar obviously was their last ditch attempt to rescue Atari from sinking .

Had it truly had any killer apps that made use of its untapped power and produced a genuine 64bit game , It might have had better fortunes.

This feline didn't have nine lives or even one life.

The Atari Dark Jaguar is vaporware

Quote:EDIT - Oh yeah, don't forget games that have long, complicated passwords, which he often gripes about.

I complain about games with passwords over about 8-10 characters too... that long is fine, but when you get into 16, 25, 40 character passwords, something is really wrong.

Quote:That was probaily due to cost cutting, The Jaguar obviously was their last ditch attempt to rescue Atari from sinking .

Yeah, definitely. The company was already struggling, and cutting corners on hardware costs are a way of maybe saving a bit... sometimes that backfires, like with Microsoft and the 360, but it didn't hurt Atari much. It wasn't reliability that killed the Jaguar, it was the graphics, controller, and games (both quantity and quality).

Jaguar sold 250,000 units, total... supposedly. The number was only like 100,000 something as of early 1996, so either that number is far too high, or more than half of the systems sold were sold at clearance prices. The Jag CD only shipped 20,000 or 40,000 systems; most of the ones shipped sold to the Jaguar diehards, but they shipped very few. This puts the Jaguar and Jaguar CD right near the bottom of the list as far as console hardware sales go... and given all of its problems, it's very easy to see why. It's too bad Atari had to end like that, but given how long it had been struggling with no hope of improvement, Atari's end was really only a matter of time, by that point.

Quote:Had it truly had any killer apps that made use of its untapped power and produced a genuine 64bit game , It might have had better fortunes.

The system is very hard to develop for and was poorly documented. It had multiple processors, a complex layout... developers didn't know what to do with it. It also wasn't great at texturing polygons, which explains why so many of the 3d games use shaded polygons, not textured. It could do some decent graphics for the time, though, when pushed... look up Iron Soldier 2 and BattleMorph for some of the best examples. But most games definitely didn't fit anyone's expectations for "64-bit".

Now the Nintendo 64... that most certainly did. :)

I think the cd add on , Would have been nice on the N64, I think if Nintendo had done it You could have seen a final fantasy VII port for the N64.

I know Nintendo actually was going to release a DVD add on but canceled it , Since the N64 was nearing its end anyway.

    On another topic'

I wish the AVGN would do a review of the Sega Saturn and the 3DO.

Good stuff. I tried to play NES Metal Gear once, I got a few screens in before quitting in annoyance.

Isn't that the trailer (from Youtube), not the full video (from Gametrailers)?

He only posts his new Nerd stuff on Gametrailers, not Youtube.

Non-AVGN, this is a review of his of the boardgame Mouse Trap. I played it a couple of times when I was a kid, though we didn't have it... the trap thing is definitely the main feature, for sure. :)

The Magnavox Odyssey, first videogame console. Hmm, I don't know what I think of this one... insulting the first one isn't right. I mean, it was something that had never been done before... managing to take something that could just move a few lines around the screen and making a whole bunch of games out of it took a lot of work. If you take the games seriously and play them as they're supposed to, it looks plenty fun...

Of course, since it doesn't stop you from cheating, the impulse to do that in a lot of games would be very strong. And that's why programming games to keep you from doing things you shouldn't be allowed to is good. But still, for the first ever... pretty amazing stuff, to say the least.

He is right about the lightgun though, I'd say... :)

Behind-the-scenes Odyssey footage. There was actually a real second person. :) More of the same humor from the full video, though... I think he likes poop jokes a bit too much.

The reason Terminator 3 is the runt of the series is that it didn't follow the same style and formula as the first two films,It was absent of Peril and suspense.

    The ending... Lol

... Bah, you got to it first again. Oh well. Great episode... he doesn't cover EVERY The Terminator game, but if you're going for the bad ones, looking at the NES and SNES ones is a pretty good choice... and the Sega CD one for a counterpoint with an actual decent game. :)

(There were also The Terminator games on the Genesis (from Virgin), SMS/Game Gear (also from Virgin), and PC (from Bethesda). The SMS/GG one is sort of a stripped port of the Genesis one, but other than that every version is an entirely different game.)

Oh, Virgin did the Sega CD one too... but despite also having that Genesis game, the Sega CD one is actually an entirely original title. Very impressive, and rare... :)

... Even though they're by a completely different company, Virgin, the SMS/GG and Genesis ones also have no saving. No lives either, evidently; you have a healthbar, but die once and that's it, start over from the beginning.

Oddly enough, NONE of the The Terminator games have continues or saving, even though they come from several different developers and publishers. How odd...

At least the Sega CD, SMS/GG and Genesis versions have level-select cheatcodes, though. That's something... the NES and SNES versions don't even have codes, as he said.

... Just played the Genesis and Sega CD ones some. The Sega CD one is clearly the best Terminator 1 game, no question, at least initially... I quickly played through two levels, quite enjoying it the whole time. The Genesis one is okay, but frustrating -- you start in a bossfight with only grenades. Then you dodge bombs. Then you go into a base and get a gun (and can fire all directions), but can't fire while moving, only when stopped... and then you set a bomb in the base and have a timer to get out. I couldn't figure out where to go (you don't have long), and it was game over. Bah. Even apart from that though, the Genesis one is okay, but the Sega CD game is definitely better across the board, in gameplay, graphics, and music. I'd heard that the Sega CD version was good, but hadn't actually played it. Well, it is good. :)

I've just begun getting into AVGN. I need to catch up. I've mostly just been skimming episodes that have caught my interest in one way or another, but I may just go back and watch all the episodes in order when I have the time.

I ran into a disturbing new problem that originally plagued me long ago back in the VHS era, Renting a dvd expecting both languages to be offered but coming to the horrifying discovery that it is the exclusive french edition with no English in it!! Only a rare annoyance if you live in Quebec, Its generally due to the fact companies don't bother including french in the dubbing or subtitling options in their wide NA release and will either make a separate french edition or none at all.

    The unskippeble previews are infuriating.

    Help! I'm a turtle and I can't get up!
I love the Power Glove! It's so bad!

Yeah, I'm watching episodes like mad now. I love this series. :D

I've thought of a few bad games I've played before that I'd like him to review (Quest 64, The Final Fantasy Legend for Game Boy, and a few others). I have to say, he's making quite a sacrifice for us, the viewers. He spends a lot of money on bad games, obscure systems, and hardware just so he can do his little internet show. I know he has a PayPal button on his site, but still, he's making quite the contribution to gaming society by putting bad games in their place. :)

Wii game boxes really, REALLY should be required to say the number of blocks the game's save file requires on the back...

I don't think you could ever fill up 512 MB from Wii saved games. It's the downloaded content that eats things up, and that does show the space it'll take up before you buy it.

But given that that's the only space you have for save files, it matters, considering that you are almost certainly going to want other things there too... it's pretty ridiculous that sizes aren't there. I mean, it was incredibly annoying back on the N64 and other older consoles that didn't list save sizes, but needed memory cards or on-system saves (3DO, TG16/CD, Sega CD, etc)... but then that changed, apart from the N64. The Xbox 360 and PS3 have hard drives, but they list save file sizes on the back of every game's case! The Wii, with only that ridiculously small flash memory, has an even greater need for it... but they aren't there. Stupid.

(The original Xbox didn't initially list game save size on game boxes, but later on they added it, once they redesigned the back supported features list thing.)

I've already eaten up most of my Wii's memory with the SBCG4AP episodes. I'm not likely to download anything else unless something particularly intriguing is released, then I might get a flash card. I still have plenty of room to save game files though. I really wish I had downloaded the SBCG4AP episodes on PC instead of the Wii.

SNES T2 (platformer) Arnold looks like Frankenstein... Lol

... And yeah, the T2 arcade game was great. I loved it in the arcade, and it's pretty good on SNES too (use the mouse!). Not sure if I've ever beaten the 'defend John Connor in the truck' part either, though... :)

I remember that arcade game as a kid, I remember getting in trouble stealing quarters from my sister to play it.

AVGN meets up with Nostalgia Critic a lot, it seems. Funny how animosity between their fans led them to become friends.

I've been to Chicago a couple times before. I wonder if I could find the Urkel/Winslow house the next time I go there.

Transformers C64 and Famicom. Another fantastic episode, it's extremely, extremely impressive that he actually beat the NES Tranformers game... that game is indeed one of the most insanely difficult things ever. Watch the episode now. :)
