Anyway, yeah, the steelsticks sound really great, but that cost is high and they aren't always available. I should get one sometime though, I do love the N64...

Here's two more solutions. The first are crafted replacement parts for a worn down analog stick. They aren't built to quite the same low tolerances as Nintendo's official ones were, so the results vary, but generally they'll be a lot better than a heavily worn down set of internal components are. Oh and, there's a chance you'll need to manually grind down some of the parts with some high grit sandpaper if they get a little stuck or are too stiff. Add some white lithium grease and you'll be set for a bit, but if you go this way, buy multiple parts so you can swap out down the line.
The second is a new hall effect based gamecube "styled" replacement. Hall effect appears to be the new hotness in analog sticks which seem to be shockingly affordable even though none of the major console makers are using them... yet. These have no drift at all due to the makeup of the tech, which involves as few moving parts as possible. Anyway, this does seem to be where the industry likely will end up going with how popular these are already becoming as replacement sticks for newer console controllers. This one, for N64, is one of two options. 8bitdo has a very good reputation among 3rd party retro controllers, and this one gets within spitting distance of OEM "feel". The online tests I've seen show it doing VERY close to the level of nuance an unused unworn N64 OEM analog stick performs at. I think a little more revising and lower tolerance construction will close that gap within the next couple years. In any case, at $20 it's far more affordable than the steelstick replacement option.
