On the one hand, it's extremely obvious what needs to be done in order to reduce gun deaths in this nation dramatically. Most notably, ban assault rifles first. Other necessary measures include much longer and more thorough background checks, allowing areas to ban any guns if they wish since the first amendment was very obviously written to refer to a state-run militia (national guard) and not anyone who wants to own any gun they want, better mental health services, and more.
However, the gun lobby is so overwhelmingly powerful and influential that if such a miracle occurs that something passes Congress soon because of all the shootings, it will be a meaninglessly limited bill that will do nothing. It's hard to have any hope at all for progress on guns, one of our nation's worst problems...
