I didn't even finish the first disc. Hell, I couldn't even tell you the last thing I was doing. Shameful! I can tell you that Aerith hasn't even died yet, if that gives you a frame of reference. There's a port for the Switch, which I bought and played through twice in quick succession. It has better graphics, and lets you cheat in various ways (turn off random encounters, always max HP in battles, and 3x speed). As someone who owned it on PS1 and played it over and over, I can say for sure you're better off going with the updated release. It's superior across the board, without depriving you of any of the original experience in any meaningful way.
BTW I bought it for PS1 because I'm stubborn about getting "the authentic experience" that everyone else got in 1997. Better late than never!
Come to think of it, I'm not even sure if there was ever a port/update, so maybe that's redundant. I think it got released for PC at some point? But I don't play PC games, so there you have it.
I actually used the 'random encounter' cheat to make the game harder, not gaining experience and AP from random battles really makes you have to strategize. I never tried doing a low-level run on the original version, because having to run away from 500 battles is not my idea of a good time.
