Ugh, that does sound terrible. Star Trek is about a good future! People keep trying to insert too much violence and edge into it, because a lot of people like that stuff -- see the success of the pretty bad modern Star Trek movies for a fantastic example of this -- but that doesn't make it okay, or in any way representative of what Star Trek is supposed to be.
And yeah, now that I think about it, the one thing I remember hearing about this show is what you reference, that they were going to make it dark and such. Star Trek has only done this well once, and even there, the later seasons of DS9, I didn't like that as much as the classic Trek style of Voyager (which, remember, is my favorite Trek series for sure!).
It's really sad that Star Trek has found success by abandoning all of the morals that made the series great to begin with, pretty much.
