What is so bad about the Dem's message there? I don't know myself; I may live in a low-population state, but I've never lived in a rural community...

It is literally the only possible option now!This is probably much harder to do than you make it sound, considering how strongly rural parts of this country have gone to the Republican Party over time... the Dems have been trying to figure out how to reverse that trend for decades now, with no success. The fact that Republican economic policies make rural America's lives worse doesn't seem to matter, people keep voting Republican either because of lies or based on social issues anyway...
