The past week or so I've been rewatching The Big O. It's not the first time I've done this, but each time I do I gain an even bigger appreciation for it. It's the kind of show that slowly reveals more and more of itself with each viewing, shining a light on the skill that went into this production.
Tonight I watch two episodes back to back. "Beck Comes Back" and "Winter Night Phatom". The former is one of the funniest episodes in the series and really cements Beck as Big O's Joker. It's got some really great scenes in it, not just from a comedy standpoint, but also scenes that provide a bit more insight into the world and the characters in it. The latter is probably one of the best in the series. The noir feel is at its strongest and the focus on Dastun is really good. And it's got such a sad ending, an ending that wouldn't be nearly as good as it is if the characters were more shallow or less interesting. The fact that the ending is so sad is a testament, once again, to the skill of the crew that made this show.
And, if you're reading this OB1, it IS better than Batman: The Animated Series. :p
